A little trick to get around the smoke test is to fit a boost wire but put the resistor in the signal wire instead of the earth wire. This will tell the ECM the engine has less boost than it actually has therfore the ECM will hold the air fule ratio control back stopping the smoke or at least making it a lot less. This will get you past a smoke test but you wouldn't want to drive it like that as it will be very sluggish to drive.

My sympathy to you and your Dad, lavasurfer. Unfortunatly i have nothing to help you with your problem. Just giving you my thougts and opinions on Great Lakes.
I have read all Great Lakes literature and have even talked with them on the phone. I inquired about Cat electronic injectors. They would not tell me anything about them. That alone iritated me. I am not looking for trade secrets, just want to know what i am buying.
I believe they change company names about as often as we change oil. I can only assume this is to avoid legal and financial problems? As i have heard them called before, Great Fakes Diesel.
I believe there are men in these forums, who are very knowledgable and capable of doing a much better job and most likely with less money.
As i said in the beginning, not much here, but just my experience...
best luck to you and your Dad.

If its a cat engine, and you have the truck, any shop with ET can hook up to the ecm. He has no way of preventing that.....

Great Lakes Diesel is the sorriest engine shop I have ever heard of. I have a friend who got an engine from there and it has NEVER run right from day ONE. They won't return calls or just not answer the phone altogether. He has more patience than me, I'd have got up there and got in someone's face!! Great Lakes Diesel is the perfect example of why bad reputations are put on quality shops trying to do a good job. Absolutely the most deplorable people, customer service, lying ##### bunch of idiots around. And the their engines SUCK!!:biggrin_25510:

the reason the acerts puke oil is because crank case pressure is higher because of higher turbo boost i had the same problem when i rebuilt mine pushing 1gal. of oil out every 300 miles put 2nd breather on not a drop comes out. it was pushing out so much air with the single breather that it was causing a vacum and sucking the oil out.
