An 18 speed to haul 46,000 I think not, what a waste of money and extra weight.............
-
How please explain, I need to hear how..........
-
Extra weight eh...... Mmmmmm. Ya I'm sure the extra 2 pounds over a 13 speed is gonna be a killer. Unless you opted for a 15 speed, a whopping 20 pounds on that. The 18 speed is a nice transmission for almost anything. There's always the right gear for any situation and start ability on a hill is superior to any other transmision. Yes it's worth it in my opinion.

I'd take an 18 over a 13, the difference in weight is negligible, as swaan stated, and the ability to shift in hills is awesome, nothing else even comes close from my experience.
A slower reverse is really nice, too. That alone is worth something, especially if you've driven one that didn't, like say, a tall geared 13 direct.
The18 speed transmissions also seemed more durable, we had 13s fail as a matter of course with over a million, but the 18s just seemed to last and last.Cetane+ Thanks this. -
Is love to have a slow reverse. I think I was just sold on an 18! My 13A with 3.36 rears can be a little fast.

Let's see a 5-6 year old Western Star with 600,000 miles is going to sell for 60-70,000 in today's market. So for 30-40 grand everything is new and the motor isn't coming up on rebuild time, plus warranties and new truck level financing. That's a no brainer.
The EGR only Coronados are running $40-50k with 700,000 miles!
Pricing is really strong in the used truck market right now. I bought my 2000 Western Star with 600,000 and a fresh in frame in Nov 05 for $39k I wish I could find that type of pricing again. That was at a WS dealer too, not some cut rate used car dealer. -
If I take egr Detroit 14.0 on coronados. I would replace the stock ecm with egr delete/more mpg ecm or egr delete kit.

Well, granted the 18 is a few pounds more than the 13. But I got the 18 at the same price I could get the 13. Keep in mind, this was a glider so I was putting in factory rebuilt trans. The rebuilt 13's are in bigger demand so they command almost the same price as a factory rebuilt 18. And I can still scale 2000 more in the box than the company trucks with their 10 speeds and all the emission nonsense. So, weight of the trans is not really a major deal. And the 18 has a lot deeper reduction in the bottom than a 13, yet another mark in the plus column for the 18.MJ1657, Cetane+ and russtrucker Thank this.
