Very few companies would let you stay out a whole year without taking some time off. You would have downtime for truck servicing, truck inspections, vacation time, ETC. You are a rookie, so they would want to see their truck every so often, to make sure it still had the fenders, or all the wheels. Realistically, you could stay out 320-330 days a year, but why is beyond me.
If you did stay out that long, as a rookie, you'd bring home maybe $45K.

Gulp. You can make that in 5 months in the oilfield. Then take 7 months off

No argument Here. Flatbed does Pay A Little Better But there's not much drop & hook. Tanker companies are A joke these days. If it were me, I'd negotiate with a mail hauling outfit and bring home A grand A week and be home everyday.Captain Call and mje Thank this.

Of course his truck would be coming in for routine maintenance. The company would have to have the miles to run him. You have bad weeks when you are not trying to get home so you must expect them if you don't plan on home time. Abilene Motor Express and Freymiller seem to have the miles. Not sure if Freymiller hires students though.

Companies love drivers that stay out. You'll be your dispatchers favorite driver.
rodknocker and Captain Call Thank this. -
Do you mean that in a good way?
-
Yep, and again, " rookies don't make much less than someone with experience in todays truckload outfits."
Captain Call Thanks this. -
I don't mean it in a bad way.Sometimes I stayed out 2 months at a time.My dispatcher told me I was his favorite driver and every morning he would type a the QUALCOMM good morning.Dispathers love drivers that stay out,Means more money for them and of course you and means they don't have to try and get you home.
Captain Call Thanks this. -
Is'nt that the truth though. Many of us had to take a pay cut when the economy first went south and many haven't broke even in what they were making before they took a cut.I took a 5 cent pay cut.
Captain Call Thanks this. -
Depends on experience, driving record, what company, what kind of freight. You would have a lot of options as companies love drivers that don't go home.Captain Call Thanks this.
