I have read that Panther Expedited can be risky water to tread with regard to which fleet owner you team for. I'm facing a layoff at the end of December with my current employer. As of Saturday, I started getting interest from a Panther Expedited fleet owner who runs six trucks. He has one tractor (2012 ProStar) and the rest are straight trucks. The straight trucks run more than the tractor does. These are all team situations. He says he's successful, but he expects the drivers to buy fuel. I assume drivers are reimbursed, otherwise it's no wonder he's successful. He does not pay per mile, but by lump sum at the end of a run. He does not pay for detention, breakdowns, no-load situations, waiting on dispatch, etc. I know that in this situation, you're working for the fleet owner and not Panther. I also believe Panther doesn't offer any sort of safety net for drivers.

Is this one worth the risk? If not, can you think of any Panther fleet owners who might be good to contact? I want to get a better picture of this potential situation at the very least. I'm in Denver. My endorsements are HazMat, doubles, tanker. I do not have a FAST card but I am not opposed to applying for one.

Feel free to message me directly if you need to keep things private.

Seriously? The owner wants you, the driver , to buy the fuel for his truck and hopefully be reimbursed at the end of the trip? Why would you even consider putting yourself into this situation ?

It sounds to me more like the driver gets the fuel surcharge and is reimbursed for the remainder. I definitely need to get the word on that and how it works. What makes me nervous is deadheading or breakdowns. If you're stuck for a week, there's no money coming in. The other thing that bothers me is you only get 1.5 days of home time per 6-8 weeks out. Does anyone really run like that? I have to make sure someone is around for Mom if I can't be here.

My approaching situation in December bugs me even more, though. I feel as if not acting is far more risky than trying this and local jobs are coming up snake eyes.

Normally drivers are paid percentage. It might be you get 60% of what the load pays and you buy the fuel and he gets the other 40%. I'd have to see his ad on EO or know the specifics in order to determine whose getting robbed. I almost got into expediting with a local carrier and the deal was I get 60% and buy fuel and he gets 40%. He also agreed to pay for repairs on the truck etc..

It sounds like a pretty standard deal for expediting.

A 60/40 split is standard in that industry with the one getting 60% paying for fuel. You are correct that Panther has no “safety net” for drivers, why would they? You are not working for them you are working for the fleet owner.

I would do some research over at http://www.expeditersonline.com/forum/forum.php and see if anyone there has worked for this fleet owner. I would personally not team drive unless I knew the person I was reaming with already as your income is depended on their performance as much as your own.

I think expediting is a good option to look at for husband/wife teams but otherwise I would not do it.

Like challenger said if you pay fuel it is usually 60/40 split. Otherwise is 40/60. If you aren't comfortable check with mayfield express in Seville, oh. I used to run for them and they cover fuel. Dave is a super nice guy too.

Thanks Flatbedn. I'm not so sure about Owner #1's program. I can't seem to get any info on him, either. Maybe he's a new player.

I stopped by the Mayfield website and sent them a note. Hopefully they haven't all left for Thanksgiving & Black Friday, yet. :)

    More questions about Mayfield --

    1) How long until the first paycheck drops? I'm asking for timing reasons so I'm not stuck not being able to pay bills.

    2) Does Mayfield pay direct deposit to your bank account or does it go to Commdata?

    3) My potential partner has a dog. Do they allow pets? I was under the impression they don't.

    4) Does Mayfield allow drivers to take short runs while the codriver is on hometime, or is it more of a 'no-team-no-move' situation?

I'd be extremely careful, bud. You need to get ALL your questions answered before taking the plunge.
FWIW, I remember a husband/wife team who worked for Panther II years ago and almost lost their shirts. There were a lot of "Panther parties" because of no freight. No freight; no checks coming in and life was incredibly difficult and frustrating for them. They decided this was NOT what they wanted to do!

Post in one of the other sections of this forum and I'm sure that someone who has background in this will be more than helpful. But the pessimist/skeptical/realist side of me says that this might not be what you think it is and you'll end up hurting yourself financially. This is just my perspective, but something doesn't smell quite right here.

And when it comes to paying fuel? Ummm...NO! He'll make his money but what about you? Diesel in my neck of the woods (SC/GA) is going for $3.50+ per gallon. Other areas are doubtless even more than here. That's a MAJOR factor to consider.

It's your call to make, but methinks you might be better off looking elsewhere. Just my 2 cents' worth, but all the best with whatever you decide to do. Please keep us posted! Thanks...
