Many companies do offer insurance but I imagine the smaller companies like 50 or less trks do not.One company refuses to get insurance for the drivers unless its absolutely mandatory. That was a company I drove for.

As far as i know everyone will have to have insurance starting in 2014 it won't matter if you're healthy or not. BTW i'm not trying to go political about it,and if you don't have it you will pay penalty when you do your taxes...

Does it sound like I am trying to be political as I have been accused?

Claiming "truck driver" as occupation (for those on individual policies) put's them in a "high-risk" group. That may be part of the problem why so many truckers go without. And no doubt trucking company group policies are higher then the median average due to this same reality.

I'm healthy and non-smoker, and after 6 increases from BCBS (individual policy) over the last 3 years, and the recent new "taxes" added on, I finally had enough. I cancelled a month ago a policy I had had 8 years and never used except for maybe three office visits.

I might go on with the company group policy for as long as that lasts but I'm fed up with this "affordable health care" path we're now hopelessly on. I'll pay cash. With $3-5k yearly deductibles now the norm on top of doubled premiums, reduced networks, higher co-pays, may as well pay cash and drop the insurance.

    Roadmedic Thanks this.

The entire time I have ever driven for a company, I relied on the coverage of my wife's policy. However, during the time I was insured at the company where I was the DOT guy, I had the same policy, so I let it drop. When they went belly up I tried to reinstate it and found the NEW policy that does not want the spouse on it. At the time I had pre existing conditions and the two policies were both at the same company. Since the company went belly up and the owner took off with the cobra money, the policy lapsed and they refused me.

I had to go and get a private policy and i have had it since 2003 and dealt with the costs each and every year.

I am self employed since 2003. I did the market thing and they ask all of the questions on her policy. It is why I am so familiar with the cost. I noticed it had not changed much. My guess, was getting the screws back then. They changed it to cover spouse and all children at one fine price.

I am running one of the individual policies with a very high deductible. I was notified that it was not qualified now and have not heard anything yet.

Found out recently that the coverage on my truck does not cover the driver for injuries in the vehicle. Makes the thought of not having insurance a tougher choice as self employed. Not sure of anything now.
