why do people think working for a small company would be better than working for a large company?

I just worked for a small company (for all of 3 days) and they're completely full of shet. they didn't give me my first load in time to get there and get my 10 hour shut down. they expect me to unload 70+ pieces of furniture for free. they dead head me (also free) to pick up my next load. NO pay for liveloading. there was only ONE truckstop where I could get fuel and they had no shower. then, at 5PM, they expect me to drive 600 miles to make my next delivery (I had about 5 hours left.) after I told them I couldn't make it - they said I should go ahead and deliver it the next morning (ie - run illegal.) after I dropped the load at their terminal the following afternoon - they complained that it wasn't delivered and that the customer was about to call the police! then they complained that they had to drive 19 miles back to the customer to deliver it (I couldn't do it because I had an appointment for medical treatment.)

on top of all this, they pay 32 cents/mile (I was getting 39 before at a large company,) NO deadhead pay, NO pay for unloading, NO 401K, NO vacation pay, NO holiday pay, NO benefits AND they wanted to pull some scam about running me as an "independent contractor" even though I was working for THEM and driving THEIR truck!

I never had any kind of nonsense like this with a "large" company. also, I would not have made hardly any money unless I had worked 20 hours a day like they wanted me to. so I ask, why would anyone want to work for a small company? I wish I had known all this before I went out with them.

At least you only lost 3 days to them and you didn't wait around months or even years for things to get better.

Not to sound like an A##Hole but these are the things that you research and find out before you hire on with that company. I would have never filled out an app if I knew this is what they offer or should should I say not offer. I don't know about you but after they interview me I start asking them several questions about their company and what they have to offer me. I get a lot of info from them before I agree to work for them. Not to mention researching the company on the Internet and asking my friends if they have any insight on the company I am applying for.

Not all small companies are like this you just need to do more Homework on the company you are considering, after all it's your future!! Keep your head up and stay positive something better will come along. I wish you the best and be safe.

actually, I talked to them twice before I decided to go to work for them and knew what they paid/what they didn't. but it never occured to ask a potential employer if they were crooks and expected me to violate the law. I couldn't research them on the net or ask anyone about them. they only have 8 drivers so nobody would know anything about them.

I guess I should have known this company didn't really have their shet together when I pulled into their lot - their office was a trailer and they had several dozen junk cars and stray dogs all over the place. at first I thought it was a junk yard instead of a trucking company. and they waited until right before I went out to even go over the paperwork with me. they were basically going to just had me the keys to a brand new truck and let me have at it.

I'm well aware of that. but I'm not sure what loophole they're trying to use to get around this. I had a really funny feeling about this after I talked to them the second time as I was on my way to take my drug test. I never felt like that before with a potential employer. I guess I still haven't learned to trust my gut.

You can find the same problems at a large company. Size, in this case anyway, doesn't matter.
