Actually the load is pushing me down... maybe I should have started in lower gear?
-
Yep... sounds right. If you're in too high a gear, the truck will accelerate, requiring more brake to hold you back.
-
I don't know about the light weights but on the Cascadia condos... You start voiding warranties in the 20s.
under dry normal conditions I run the RPMs up to 17 and 3 second stab brake. Grade and distance determine my gear selection BEFORE I go down the hill. If there is a low speed limit, I try and select the gear closest to the speed limit at 17k RPM. That way I either barely go over when I brake or I never get over the limit. CA CHP can be pretty anal on Grapevine with that 35 mph... Yes, even when you are empty.TooGroovy Thanks this. -
I start at 30 - 35 or so in 8th for a 6 th downg. and b4 I know it I'm rpm 1800
-
I'm tryng not to use the brakes unless I must.... b.c. of black ice

I by no means have the experience of the others posting here, but I've been around enough, between fire trucks and motor coaches to have a bit of experience. I can tell you that if you are driving a 10 speed, loaded, facing a 6 or 7% downgrade you are starting in way to high a gear to keep your speed under control without lots of braking. The rule of thumb I was always told during fire truck training was one gear higher than what you were in when you climbed it. That may or may not hold true any longer. Others will chime in, I'm sure. Especially if I'm off base.

"Pushing" you down? You do realize that is present tense? (Meaning current time) So what are you doing on Truckers Report while a load is "pushing you down" a grade? Just kidding... I couldn't help my self.
-
Might be (yet another) odd-ball question here... but do the rooms at Prime's hotel have a refrigerator? I need my morning coffee, and my morning coffee needs creamer.
-
Yes. No microwave though.
