Go to your local state motor vehicle department. They will tell you and have all the information you need to know to obtain one.
Truckergirl0720 and CondoCruiser Thank this. -
Where you live only requires a CDL if you drive a commercial vehicle over 26,000 lbs. That would be a class B CDL. First you go get your permit after you pass the written tests. Then you have someone take you down there in a class B vehicle and take the road test.
You need a DOT medical card so go ahead and get your physical. Walk in clinics tend to be cheaper. Just google "(city, state) DOT physical" and you'll find them.

Panther is based in Ohio.I would be driving for them Commercially in a cargo van.I guess its called a Chauffeur License?I don't know anyone with a cdl b vehicle.

If the van is rated more than 10,000 lbs GVWR then you still need a medical card. The website only refers to a Class C as a passenger license. Any commercial license still requires a written test, pretrip and road test. Call the DMV and they'll give you the specifics.

Alright will do.Ill report back in.Thank you for your help.No it's just a Chevy Express 3500 cargo van.

Some forum members have mentioned that their home state doesn't issue a Class C CDL . In CO a Class C would be required for a passenger vehicle capable of transporting 16 people, that includes the driver, and having a GVWR of 26,000 lbs. and lower or any vehicle transporting a placarded amount of Hazmat. So maybe Panther wants their van drivers to take an occasional load of Hazmat, you should check with them about a HAZMAT endorsement.. I did a quick search for Chevy Express 3500 Vans and depending on how it is set up the GVWR was 9600lbs.

Before you invest any time and money in your pursuit. Call a recruiter at Panther to find out the CDL requirements. Also, your past driving history and criminal record will be a factor in getting hired. That will be a good time to address the recruiter with any past issues.

Panther requires you to have a CDL, just as FedEx and other companies do.
A class C is what is needed,
It is easy to get, take the written tests, arrange for a road test in a vehicle you will most likely drive, and pass the road test - really really easy. -
Companies have their requirements, state's have their requirements and the feds have their requirements.
As far as most states and federal requirements the only ones required to have a CDL 26,000 lbs or less is if you haul more than 15 passengers or the vehicle required to be placarded.
So I would assume he is going to have to go through the hazmat background check and have the hazmat endorsement.
