Just remember what works for one person may not work for another. Research companies as much as you can before settling on one. Actually have a couple of choices picked out in case one does not work out. I was confused too when I first started looking into this. I had drivers telling me I would not make nothing the first year and had to pay my dues, blah blah blah. I had already made up my mind if I could not make a decent wage driving a truck then I would just stay at what was then my current job. I hated it but it paid the bills and I was home every night.
Don't sell yourself short and think you have to drive for peanuts right out of the gate.realsupatrucka Thanks this. -

Mine is very basic. No chrome, no chicken lights. But it runs great, has had few repairs, and cost very little to purchase.rubberducky68 Thanks this.

Trying to find something local with them LTL companies but it's like finding a niddle in the sea
All of them asking for years of experience...
One of them told me when I show up in their office for an application "you can come back in too years ,we wont forget you"
that's was very disrespectful but ...what can I say..it's the reality of the industry
I even applied for a dock worker or a driver apprentice but seems like finding a local trucking job is real hard. -
It all depends on what you're hauling. A specialized flatbed driver highly trained to move very sensitive equipment can make big dollars as well as the others. But as a general rule I believe that a driver that finds a top oil company can make the most for his or her time hauling gasoline.

A little warning I have observed in the gasoline business. It has changed where it's extremely hard to get hired on with the majors anymore. Most of the large refiners/producers have gotten out of the downstream operations. That means they have sold all there assets from the refinery to the pump. They now have common carriers hauling their product going to a leased or owned station. With that sale went all the great benefits and pay. I was lucky and retired just before BP/ARCO sold out so I got a really good retirement package. Some didn't. Now you have to look for the good companies that have been doing good work for many years. Don't let the clean fancy trucks fool you because I have seen some where the pay package was nothing. In the past some of the common carriers would give the majors a great contract and once they are in and the major pulled all of their equipment out the contract went up and the drivers sometimes got shafted. The best source for finding a good company are the drivers. Talk to more than just one. Talk to enough so you get the same information and then make a decision.
