being a roadblock in the middle lane was never considered common sense or common courtesy

    its plain ol' self centeredness

In the olden days you never seen the middle lane ridden like today because there was the common sense method .
The smith system has nothing to do with the idiot that rides the middle lane because he is to lazy to be a truck driver instead of just another steering wheel holding wannabee .

Like the old saying goes you can't fix stupid and the cruise control has made for allot of lazy stupid drivers.

Oh yes by the way the speed limit will not be 70 MPH until the signs are posted so be careful out there!!

Stop with the Olden days stories. There wasn't even 3 lanes in the olden days. When you speed you run up on slower traffic no matter what lane you are in so slow down, and you won't be whipping in and out of traffic. It's kinda scary to watch these speed racer truck drivers change lanes like they are in a honda civic. Stop hauling that cheap freight and you wont be in such a hurry to haul the next load of cheap freight. Hey it will be there when you get there. Nobody want's it :)

Yup like the lazy ones who can't tun their cruise control off when approaching a slower vehicle in front of them instead they carelessly whip out in front of you doing the speed limit in the middle lane. No consideration what so ever and just too lazy to turn the cruise off.
I remember a lot of 3 lane roads back in the day as well and everyone stayed right. Of course those were REAL truck drivers then and not the displaced replacement workers blinding you with their high beam lights when you pass them.

I think you read marmonman wrong. I don't think he was implying riding the 2nd lane was ok. I don't even think the Smith System says it's ok, either.
I don't know about Smith System because I have always driven by common sense method, which is now "fashionably" called the Smith System.
I do fully agree with you that riding the center lane is plain ol' self centeredness.

the smith system says to drive in the middle lane, be the "rock in the stream" and drive 2-3mph slower than the speed of traffic, so you keep that safety cushion and avoid any rear end collision

NOT COMMON SENSE, just insurance gobbledy gook

Keep right except to pass. Sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn't.

Reading some of the posts when this subject comes up makes it seem like some think everyone should be in the far right lane regardless of traffic volume even when there are five lanes.

I'm usually in the right lane though when traffic volume is heavy with lots of on/off ramps, and I can keep up with the flow I'll move to the second lane.

Even when you're going with the flow though you always get some idiot on your bumper who seems to think that since you are going slower than his governor allows you are impeding him. Some people need to learn to relax when they're in congested areas.

Smith System, lol. Someone posted this video a while back. I'm sure they have refined it since 1956 but honk your horn and flash your lights before passing, WTH!
