Hi drivers. I got a question. What do you guys consider a unsafe wind speed for a empty truck? Right now were in Kansas and it was 30mph gusting to 40 do we stopped. Now it's 36 gust and still moving poles ad throwing sand, rocking our truck with others parked next to us. Would you go? I've only been out since thanksgiving. I'm staying till it either lightens up or my shift is done at 6am. Not under load just was heading to pick up. Late anyways.

Wind is nothing to play around with...If its causing you any loss of control over your trailer...you are best to stay put. Specially out in KS, OK, CA, WY or TX. It gets nasty out there
tow614 Thanks this. -
Or reduce your speed to where you aren't being pushed around as badly...be very careful though...

Just before we pulled in it was gusting to the point I dropped it down to 55 from 60 and the trailer would look like the right tires wanted to touch fog line while I was centered. Still windy. Light poles swaying and I'm in the petro in Colby and all I hear is the wind.

Remember to turn your flashers on if your going significantly slower than the speed limits. Whenever I am running 15 mph (or more) less than the speed limit, I have mine on.

Yea. We were on i70 going east. Winds coming from north. Gotta take us83 south to liberal if we still get this load.

If the wind is steady....you are alright for the most part. Its the unpredictable gusts that will get you. Being so late at night, and a weekend, and out in the middle of nowhere, you won't have much traffic to deal with....you could probably just hit your jakes whenever you are being passed to lessen the amount of time you are alongside someone and getting blown into the other lane...and keep on rollin!
-
True. If it was steady no problem them. But it's gusting good. And often. Trainer told me to pull it in and I did rightly so. Snow coming to from Denver way. Flurries already.
-
But you forgot WY, Colorado, Nebraska and Montana. They all get high winds, esp near Butte Mt. But generally an empty unit will topple over at about 25-35 mph winds.

I imagine op is already picked up ld and gone. But if it was me I would go with it and drive slower.Only the trailer tells me if its advisable to keep driving or not.Just always make sure to hug the shoulder line because trailers do fishtail.
koncrete cowboy Thanks this.
