hello to all that read this and thanks in advance to any replies!
i am thinking of getting into field but have some reservation about it. i have a two yo that i have not seen much of due to military obligations. i am getting out in three months and looking to move right into field. ive seen that most say that you get a day off for every 7 youre gone?!?! ive seen a few company ads that says home every wknd or every other wknd, is that for veteran drivers? is there any chance of a green driver getting home more than once a week? also how does the daily/weekly drive hrs work? sorry for the questions and im sure the gramatic errors but on a time crunch.
again thank you all and be safe where ever the road may take you!!
is this a good career Choice?

Where will you live when you get out; city/state. This concerns the hiring area you will be living in.
Some companies have weekends at home programs such as McElroy and Maverick; there are others.
If you get a food service job you might be home every day or almost every day and make great money; Companies like U.S. Food Service, Golden State Foods, Greatwide.
Another good option is get into tankers right out of CDL school, then in a few months you can easily get a local job, making good money and be home every day or almost every day. Sometimes new CDL drivers get a good local tanker job right out of CDL school.Tonythetruckerdude and to truck or not to truck Thank this. -
That baby's only going to be 2, once. I'd think a veteran transitioning to civilian life would have a wealth of VA resources. Ask your superior officers for letters of recommendation while you have a chance.to truck or not to truck Thanks this.

You have to watch out for the trucking gimmicks. The weekend home time always comes with hoops and ladders. Lots of games in this industry and they are always changing the rules. If you want to put up with the headache's and lie's. This may be the industry for you, but It seems like you would like to spend time at home. So I would pick this as a last resort.

There is alot of local jobs home ever night bit there doing stuff that isn't easy. When I got out of the military I refused to go otr cause of the not seeing family, there is jobs out there. You do need to put a location that will help us. Also look at coke or pepsi distribution places

Also an LTL local driver would be great for being home every day while earning good money. FedEx Freight, YRC, ABF, Saia, Con-Way and others. All look highly on Vets. Usually you need some driving experience but some have training programs.

It is simple, if you have family at home, have a concern with seeing your kids grow up with you, then this is not the profession you need to get into.
With all these options with your education benefits, you have a wide range of choices that can make you good money while at the same time not putting your life in danger while doing it.
And thinking about it much of these trucking schools that accept VA benefits are stealing the money from you. My opinion after seeing what some vets have learned.to truck or not to truck Thanks this. -
