I went to MTC and I personally think it is a rip-off' You spend the 1st day getting your permit. The 2nd day is all paperwork. Days 3 & 4 are class work then on Friday you are sent to the yard never to return to class! The food sucks, the hotel is known as Heroine Central. You spend most of your day walking along side a truck where another student is trying to learn the moves. Then you get your turn. Approx 15 mins then back to beating the pavement again. All this will cost you $7k! Their lunches are fast food i.e. Mc. Donalds, Wendy's, Little Caesars Pizza and The China House.

I am currently employed by Hogan and like any other company they have their good points and their bad points. First of all I spent 13 days straight on their lot without getting a break. This was during orientation. I did have a trainer during 8 of those days but, we ran from St. L to Indy every day. Not much of a run. When we got back I was responsible to find me a place to sleep and my own food. (I slept in the truck as it was a sleeper luckily.) Since then I have been an OTR driver for them and now I am on the dedicated run. KCKs to Edwardsville, Ill. (265 miles one way). I sleep in my own bed every day (I run from 9p-9a Sun thru Thur)' They don't offer a raise at 90 days like most everyone else. Only after 1 year. I have been there for just over 90 days and already know my first raise is $.01 p/ mile. OH BOY!!!
My current FM is Craig. Altho we don't deal with each other very often, he is mine.lilqueen1099 Thanks this. -
Papa whiskey I'm set to go to orientation at hogans out of cloumbus Ohio on Monday the 6th of January set up for a Dollar General are you still getting decent miles? Do you still like it there? Do you know anything about there dg accounts or drivers do the like it do they make decent money excetra?? I've been fliping back and forth on whether or not to go regional or dg so and as I said above I'm set for dg atm.

As far as the DG account, I am not that familiar with it but, they do travel a lot. I know one of the guys I went to orientation with seems to be happy with it. You can get good miles but, it is 100% touch. You are responsible for unloading your truck when you get to the store. This is why I didn't take that route (plus the fact that I am almost 50 y/o).
You can get good miles. I average 500 p/day and I am home every night. You will be home every w/e if that makes a difference.
If you have any more questions, please feel free to contact me here or at Papa_Dawg1964@yahoo.com. Welcome to Hogan.reptij Thanks this. -
I have read this whole thread and I am really impressed with your patience and honesty, Dawg and Whiskey. My BF had his position terminated after 24 years with the same company and has decided he's going to be a truck driver. He said this has been his plan since 2002. I still don't understand why he is pursuing it now when he is 49 instead of when he was 37??? I am trying to be supportive as much as I can even though I feel he would be better off getting the certificate from the Community College that goes with his 24 years of experience. It makes the most sense. Driving is a boyhood dream. He doesn't want to work in an office but doesn't understand that if he is an OTR company driver that his office is his truck and it just happens to have a place to rest and it isn't a free place to live. His home is with me. His parents are still alive and also want to see their son and need him too. This is the first positive thread I have read all the way through without people bashing the company in any way. That is huge for me. I was a nurse before I got sick and we could tell who was going to make it or not during their first day of orientation. My guy is very passive and doesn't like and can't tolerate confrontation of any kind. My biggest fear is that if he is 1200 miles from where he is supposed to be and is confronted or ends up butting heads with some punk or a group of jerks that think they own the road and everything that has to do with trucking, he is going to get hurt bad. He doesn't know how to defend himself and he will be a mess that won't be able to get to where he is supposed to be. He'll lose his job and reputation and never be able to drive. I don't want this to happen and if he ends up hating the job, let it be for other reasons. Hogan sounds nice. The truck is still your office because it's where you work! Right or wrong? I'm fine with answers. Is it a free place to live or do you have a home? If it's a free place to live, you are basically homeless when you have a few days off. I don't want to crush him. I want him safe and I want him happy at his job. He has tried to talk to OTR guys at truck stops and they look at him and walk away. When I'm out and about, they will talk to me and are always kind and polite. He will be going to Westwind CDL Training Center. The state is paying for it and there are no funds available for his zip code. He is going to be living with me so I told him to use mine. It keeps him out of MTC and he'll have to stay in Cuba but if it is a much better school then so be it. He knew I was sick from day one when I met him and I'm not going to get better. Being gone for 3 weeks or more isn't an option. I need him here. It's sounding like Hogan is a really good place to check out. The best I've read so far. What do they pay? It isn't about who pays the most. I want safety and for him to be treated with respect since he treats everyone he meets the same way. I'm not trying to control him. I just want the very best for him. He deserves it. We all do. Feedback please!! Thank you.

Hey lilqueen. Don't hold him back from his dream please. The reason I say this is because I was 47 whan I finally got me cdl. It was my boyhood dream too. Please let him live it. I am not trying to be a snob but, let him fly. As far as getting lost, if he follows the Qualcomm he wont have a problem with it. Jill is a very demanding woman. (She is the voice for the Qualcomm.) My wife just loves her. She keeps me on the right track.
As far as pay, I know Hogan starts you fresh out of school at .$24 p/ mile. Take that times the number of miles he runs and it adds up real quick. I personaly make about $150 per day. Now, most of these other guys on here will complain about how little I get but, sitting at home on my butt pays less and I have a family to support.lilqueen1099 Thanks this. -
I really appreciate your reply. 150 a day isn't awful. There are much worse things out there that pay less and pay more. I have done a lot of thinking and really observing all drivers while I'm driving. I don't want to hold him back from getting his CDL. He is really worried about contributing to the household. He is moving in with me. The bills with the mortgage total less than 700 a month. I live in a decent neighborhood. I have just observed some things. He likes being around his former coworkers. He likes the daily comradery. There is one manager that is a bully. Bottom line and he is the reason My guy was let go. Hy guy is one if those people who's life is so compartmentalized, using the restroom has it's own time and place in his brain. It's been this was for 30 years. He had a plan if he ever had his position terminated. It had it's own structured time, place, etc. It is like someone took the big bookshelf and turned it over and scattered his organized life all over and he doesn't know where to begin to look to start getting things back in order. It has thrown him for a loop. Pretty depressed. I suggested he go talk to someone, I can't force him. There is much more to it. I don't want to post on here. I have talked to a few different guys from different companies and they have all told me the same thing; your job is what you make of it. Most companies are going to elogging which is a good thing for everyone.
He wants to drive where he is gone for 4-6 weeks at a time. He decided this before he met me. I'm not OK with that since there are other options. He passed his DOT physical and was driving deliveries for the company that let him go. They called him back knowing they screwed up and have been offering scraps to do grunt work and he is taking it. Their whole office network went down the other day and they called him to come and fix it. He built it. he only charged 50 bucks an hour. Going rate for a tech with his skills to come for an office network is 150 an hour or more. Those guys make 600+ a day as an independent contractor. This crap company was griping about paying him 50 an hour. They are horrible. The CEO lives in Chesterfield MO in a 7500 sq ft condo. 4.6 million he paid for it. He has no clue what is going on in this particular office. I'm glad he is away from the politics but he misses the daily dose of those people. I know that he could be applying at several places for driving jobs and get hired. FED EX is one. I have a friend there that would have him driving the Epress box trucks. 40K a year and he doesn't want it. They will pay for him to go get the CDL and the benefits are amazing. He wants to do this all by himself. I'm trying to be supportive and even told him what I've read about what companies and most people that are positive about the same company always have some clown that didn't get their way and they hate it all. 1 out of 30 means the individual has the issues. I don't hear bad things about Hogan. Talked to a guy from Schnieder, he loves his route. Gone 5 days and home for a solid 48 hours. Those jobs are out there for new drivers and being in STL has it's advantages. His mind isn't clear right now. I haven't asked him not to do this but I have asked him to go talk to someone to clear his mind of the clutter so it's fresh and ready. I want that slate to be clean and positive from day 1. I don't think that is asking too much. I want the very best for him. he is in a committed relationship and the pay at Hogan is perfect for the first year. They have designated routes. He isn't going to be gone 6 weeks at a shot. A lot was thought through and some wasn't. I'm not giving this guy up. I'm just asking him to look for better choices that has him home more. I have talked to so many different people and they have all told me that there is no reason for him to take a job that keeps him gone longer than 2 weeks unless he wants to be as far away from home as possible. That may have been the case 2 years ago. Things have changed. He has me in his life and wants me there too. I've become much more accepting since my post. I can't thank you enough for taking the time to answer me. I want him to be happy. I want him to like his job. He has the cash to pay for the school. I say use it for that or the bankruptcy courts are going to take it. School will be done and he can be on with his life. Many companies will offer tuition reimbursement if he stays a year. I just feel it's a smart move so no one can take his money and he will be ready to go to work. Working Bill is a happy Bill. He doesn't do bored well. He is great at sleeping. he feels sorry for whoever he trains with because he thinks his snoring is awful. My dog can beat him in a snoring contest any day!
When he is content and relaxed, snoring is minimal. I love him and really appreciate you taking the time to write. 150 a day and you're home every night??? That's nice. Bills are paid and you're there. That's important.
