I have a very small fleet of flatbeds. I my self do oversize once in a while. Does anyone have any links or information on pilot cars? I would like our team to buy one and get the license and training.

In ak all you need is a flagging cert. and any auto with a beacon. Here you can study and test online to acquire the certification.

go to pilotcars unlimted at yahoo. Their forum has a lot of info there.
Seeing how you are based in Va. you will need to be certified in that state. Plus some of the neighboring states you need it also. The site will tell you what states will work with the other states certs..

    aktundratugger and 6wheeler Thank this.

Has anyone ever hired a Pilot Car service? Do they normally charge mileage? Do they charge for running back to their home terminal or do they kinda try to arrange a backhaul? Anyone ever had any experience with this?

the one i had, was a mileage charge. $1000 for 700 miles. he had to haul butt back 300 miles for a load taking him back to home where we started from. he had a car so even if he just went back. his gas cost was around $120. so he made good money just from my load alone. plus whatever he got for the load back home.

his brother was his dispatcher though. i think the percentage was 10% for brother's services.

Yea, but they still need to figure insurance costs, maintance , replacement, and driver pay.
Then they have hotel costs as well...

Average 1.45 a mile(actual miles) plus $65 per night out, they eat the deadhead.
