Volvo is know for it injector problems they have had many recalls. The reason USX dumped these trucks was high cost of maintenance. Cummins or Detroit do not have injector problems one might fail here or there but nothing like a Volvo motor. Also all 2007 to 2010 DPF engines have major issues with the ERG and DPF that cost you allot in repairs. Volvo also has injector cup failures and the wiring to injector failure. Both cummins and detroit have a lower cost ownership over volvo. Also they a much larger dealer network or repair shops that can work on them beside going to the ripoff Volvo dealer.

only injector problems was the D13 in 2008 model year, from what I read.
My mechanic takes care of of 75 trucks 2006, 2007 model years, about 25 have the D12 Volvo engine the rest are cummins.
so far 8, that's right 8 cummins engines, Come in with broken exhaust manifold bolts, Time they fix that, the turbo is bad also. All around 700,000 800,000 mile on them.
Not one engine failure from Volvo or the turbo. That says a lot right there.nax, KB3MMX and Mdtrucks2013 Thank this. -
Looking at a 09 volvo cummins 15l, 13spd, 340 rears, 470hp. In my area has little hills like atlanta, ga also areas in sc that has little hills. Is it worth it or is the 340 to low dont know much about these rears.

Many I say Many fleets have dumped Volvo over the injector and injector cup problems. Any one can tell you of all the recalls for use using tin for injector cups only to replace with stainless steel then there wiring harness that crack and let oil in and short out. Volvo has the highest cost of ownership of any truck. Will say it a million mile engine but the over cost will kill you.

v6killer, thanks for your reply about the D12.
I have two 2007 Volvo D12 units, the first one (2007 VNL 670 750k miles) has an EGR valve issue and I think I will have to replace the EGR valves and the cooler in one shot. Is there anything else I can do to prevent this major expense. Also, does this model have the injector harness issue you mentioned?
My other unit a 2007 VNL 780 with 950k miles with an automatic Eaton Ultrashift transmission is having the injector and transmission issues.. For the injector, they shop told us the #5 injector was bad and we changed it ($1400) out. Will i have to replace all the injectors one by one now? We have not replaced the EGR valves or cooler since we had the truck 3 yrs or better, at least not to my knowledge. We leased the truck to another O/O for a while.
For the transmission issue, took it to the shop 3 times, haven't fixed the problem yet. The issue is in 10 gear, , won't drop back into a lower gear when climbing hills when loaded. Sometimes we can try to manual shift it down but sometimes it won't let us. Once it starts dropping out of 10th to 9th, it happens multiple times.
Took it to Advantage in NC, just outside of Fayetteville, they said it was a speed sensor, they changed it and 500 miles later the samething started happpening again. Seems to only happen when we are loaded with more than 3 cars (I'm a car hauler) which is usually just over 50k total weight.
I am wandering whether I should get rid of them both now or not. If so, what should I replace them with if we use the specs of the VNL 780. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.Last edited: Dec 20, 2015

Have you checked the wiring?
-
On the 780 with the ultrashift, The first time the shop said a portion of the wiring was corroded and replaced about a 3 ft section and cleaned up the connections. The second time, the replaced more wiring. 3rd time, speed sensor after they ran a bunch of diagnostics...
-
Why replace such short sections?
Should have replaced it from the firewall to the gearbox.(unless you were planning to sell the truck in the near future?) -
I would try this place first,
http://www.otrperformance.com/d12-ved12-egr-performance-kit-vnl-vn-vhd
This will take care of your EGR and EGR cooler problems!
Next, the transmission you have run on a air, that shifts the forks Y and Z, sometimes the forks get bent, and causing the problem you are having.
There is Two AKA speed and cam sensors, both are the same sensor. theres one that sits in the front of the engine is the cam sensor, the other sits on the fly wheel. both work injunction together, in case one goes out the other one will take over. MUST REPLACE BOTH THE SAME TIME. Its hard to tell which one is bad!
as for the injector, most of the time its the wiring harness going to the injector is the problem!nax Thanks this.
