I stopped running under my own authority about 8 years ago, leased to a fairly large tank out fit. Working out pretty good so far, don't see any reason to go back. But that's just me, just because it works for me does not mean it will work out for you. Had the same "joint" problem everywhere I have worked. Even when I ran under my own authority.

Welp............Ive run my own authority since 1992..Yes,My MC starts with a '2'.
I could never Lease my equipment on to a carrier...........When youi do that, you lose all control of managing and operating your business.
It takes a real businessman to run your own truck....When you Lease on,Others are preparing your journey for you.
But it goes much further............Lease on, There goes 25% out the window, PLUS (This is the real thinker)...Are you REALLY getting the percentage from the customer that this carrier promises?
Chew on that for a bit too........Im no stranger to transportation, These carriers will Bite off Monies owed to you, Kinda like Brokers...You Get Greedy.
Also.......You dont need somebody elses Safety Department 'Organizing' you.......If you do, You dont need to own a truck in the first place.
Look......For me,Theres only 1 way.....Either your an Owner-operator.... Or you are an Owner of a truck. Simply put. -
I suspended my authority and leased to a carrier, I gross less but net more and have ten times less time involved.
It all comes down to direct freight. If you can get your own accounts you will make more running under your own mc number. If you broker most loads you make more running under there name.
Giving up 25 percent might sound like a lot, but it's not. It's not like you get all the money on a load from a broker.
Example: load pays 1250. 1000 dollars linehaul plus 250 fsc. At 75 percent you are getting 750 plus the fsc for an even grand. Now if you have your own mc number and they broker that load to you can get whatever you can negotiate, sometimes that will be much less than that thousand bucks, other times a little more. Is that little more going to balance out the extra expenses involved in running on your own?281ric Thanks this. -
I had been thinking about it for a while and now with the step Im pulling, Im getting way better rates than w the flat but would like more access to o/s freight. Im only driving about 1500 miles a week and seem to spend alot of time looking for and negotiating loads. I think the fact that its a new to me trailer and its slow might have something to do with that fact, my thinking was leasing on to a company that has the freight I want might get me more miles and make more money.
My cousin pulled my trailer for a week and I was able to get gross more as I was booking loads full time , not driving and booking.
I dont expect to walk in and be put on top of the list, I know it will be hard and the thought of having a dispatcher that probable doesnt care how good or bad my week is , is not appealing to me.
All the things that have been mentioned have crossed my mind.
Im most likely going to wait it out and see what the busy season brings but wanted to get opinions from yall.

You dont use Brokers on most of your hauls..........
Im somewhere around 80%-20% customer vs broker..
Your right..if you choose to work with freight brokers.....Your gonna make less than a lease driver.
But....Think about what you give up leasing on ........Your control of business just took a backseat ride to success.
bascially, someone that leases their truck on is a glorified company driver, Even if you get choice of loads.
I personally could never do it. If I didnt have my own authority..Id sell my truck and go to work local in Chicago running LTL's or Cartage p/u and delivery281ric Thanks this.
