    Hey everyone,

In the next 1-2 months, I will be entering trucking school, to get my CDL-A. I plan on obtaining all of my endorsements, besides probably the bus/passenger one. I wish to have a plentiful of opportunities open to me, because you never know what can happen in life! I was wondering when you can start taking tests for your endorsements? Can you take them while you're in trucking school, before you get your CDL? When is a good time to take/get them? Lastly, when and how do I apply for the TWIC card? Thanks for the help and assistance, it is more than appreciated!

You can get your cdl permit anytime. As well as all endorsements you want or need. I believe the permit is only good for 180 days though so you will want to make sure you can get your cdl in that time. As far a hazmat is concerned. I think it's different from state to state. But here in Indiana this is the link to get you started. Transportation Security Administration | Hazardous Material Endorsement Enrollment Website Other states use this too. Not sure which ones though.

You have time now might as well start studying.Your dmv has a free crl manual or I think you can download it.Also get your permit before going to school. That'll be one less headache you have to worry about.

Thanks, CrossJ. Those are good to know. I may hold off on the HazMat endorsement for a bit longer, but I'm not sure. It appears that the HazMat takes the longest to do. I reside in NY, so I can look into that stuff. Isn't there a few different types of the HazMat endorsement??

Thanks, pattyj. I have been doing some of the practice tests on this site, and have been doing some studying off of the manual in NY, online. I plan on getting a book from Barnes and Noble, to enhance my studying for the permit test, and the endorsement tests. I, also, plan on getting the actual book from my DMV here within the next week. Yes, I did plan on getting my permit before going into trucking school. Thanks for the FYI there! One last question that may sound kinda stupid: for the permit test for the CDL, what is the test subject? Is it the General Knowledge part? Thanks.

Save your money get a cdl manual at your dmv free of charge.Everything you need to know is in that manual. The book at Barnes and nobel will only confuse you.General knowledge, combination vehicles and air brks are the 3 test youll have to take to get your permit.I do have my hazmat and there is a lot more red tape to get that endorsement.

Thank you yet again, pattyj! I appreciate your advice and help! I may just do that and save my money! I know, I was looking at some of the hoops in the Hazmat. I don't think I will have a problem getting it. Aren't there different types of HazMat endorsements? Like one is an X, another is an H? What's the difference? Thanks.

Oh, and I do not really understand the whole "hire within our district" ordeal, or whatever. I think you get my question. Maybe I'm thinking too much into it, but I reside in NY. How does the whole hiring/application process work in the trucking industry? Thanks.

Not all states offer the printed manual for free. Here in KY (at least in our county) if you want a physical manual you have to pay for it. It's free online but that's it.
