Hello, I'm going to be attending truck driving school this coming November when I get out of the Army. My ultimate plan is to go into heavy haul, would like some input on what flatbed companies would be a good fit for me to eventually make the transition.

A lot of that will depend on where you want to be based out of. There are a lot of companies doing heavy haul in the northwest, as well as other areas. Lots of luck with school, and hopefully you'll find your dream job.
-
Depends on where you will live.
These hire new CDL graduates:
Rinaudo Enterprise
R.E. West (heavy haul/oversize division)
System Transport (heavy haul/oversize divisions) -
Another to look at is Sherman Bros. They have a heavy division too. They are located on I-5 just north of Eugene Oregon. System Transport in headquatered in Spokane Washington, but have a terminal around Stockton California. Hope this give you a starting point

I'm going to be based out of Tennessee, spoke with R.E. West already, they currently do not hire students. Thinking about going with TMC, Maverick, or Melton.
-
Melton has excellent benefits plus healthcare.
Keim TS hires new CDL graduates and has a TN terminal.
Maverick is OK also. -
When you say heavy haul, are you talking OTR, sitework/construction, what? Honestly, if you're really looking to get into that, it's quite different from hauling freight. Look for companies which have RGN trailers among their flatbed fleet... I seem to recall TMC having them. HH companies are going to want you to know the dynamics of the base trailers you'll be working with beforehand (lowboys, pontoon trailers, beam trailers, etc.).

TMC has on oversize (John Deere primarily) that you could work into after perhaps several years. It's not easy working into those positions but nothing worthwhile is ever easy. TMC has a great reputation, training program, and weekend home time system, and TN works good for them. From flatbed to oversize, then to heavy haul. But much experience in all will be required to advance to the next.

Melton has military apprenticeship so you'll get few extra bucks in your pocket like me.

Could you take a minute and describe how this program works?
thanks
