Unfortunately, it is all too common to see junk questions like this on a multiple-choice test. They really erk me because it ends up being: 1) A question that tests the takers command of the English language much more than their knowledge of the subject being questioned. and 2) It shows a lack of command of the test maker on the test subject. In particular to this question, option D is too ambiguous. Not enough information is given to make a true or false determination. In reality, it depends upon other conditions about how and why the engine is overheating as to whether the engine should be shut down or not. Also, for option B is pretty confusing to me and a tad ambiguous also. Removing a radiator cap on an overheating engine is prone to numerous safety issues. It is a fairly unsafe task to accomplish. However, under certain conditions and if done safely, removing the cap to be able to add more water or coolant is a feasible option.
Stupid Question!!!!
my 2 cents says the answer would be C. I can not think of any situation or circumstance where driving without radiator fluid is good. It does not specify anti-freeze, simply radiator fluid, which can be simply water. For option A, you CAN operate with only water as radiator fluid, you do not HAVE to have any anti-freeze in a climate that does not have freezing temperatures. So A, can be true, although not advisable. B is also possibly true, although only in certain conditions and with a major doses of safety. D, as mentioned above is also possibly true, given specific conditions. The only option that is "basically" only False is C (although I have, for very short periods of time run an engine without any radiator fluid)Last edited: Jan 4, 2014

mcubstead, 100% agree with your true/false assertions and your take on the question being worded wrongly.
Tho my explanations for some of your true/false would be a bit different.
Just noticed this thread, but I'm 2 weeks behind. -
