I posted this in another forum also. Wasn't entirely sure which section this would fall under but I think this would be pretty close.

I started a business and am working as an independent contractor for an expedited shipping company.

I drive a covered pickup truck, and figured it cost me about .30/mile to run it. Based on that figure, and how many empty miles I'm driving, I realized I'm not making any money.

It's a pretty good gig otherwise. No logs, no scales, no dealing with DOT's, imo, messed up new hours of service regs.

Maybe I'm just working for the wrong company. I do like them though as they seem to treat you like an independent.

Was hoping somebody may have some experience and insight about this type of work. Something I may be missing. Maybe a better company to sign on with.

Would something like this be a suitable option?

Worked 14 hours today between that and another job I have.

You drive a pickup. I don't even know if it has a class. Just drive it.

I had this app on my phone called acar and have been using it since 2010 on my truck.

It tracks fuel, maintenance, and repairs. It can also track based on things like purchase price and and registration costs, but I never put that information. The average has actually been decreasing lately. It was sitting at .288/mile, now it's down to .270/mile.

I'm attributing that to the lower fuel costs and not having to do any maintenance or repairs in a long time. I did however get 4 new tires, plugs, wires, fuel filter, oil change, and wiper blades yesterday. I have yet to add those, but I imagine it will jump that average up quite substantially.

I need to figure in depreciation somewhere in there also. Will have to replace it someday.

    What was the other forum?

So you are a IC, not a business.

What is the expedited shipping company?

Of course not, you are doing courier work and need to make a little more than your costs, like 50 cents per mile more.

No biggie, van expediters been doing that for years.

I'm thinking that too. BUT see other companies won't accept a pickup so a van would be better.

Again this sounds like courier work, not expediting.

    Nope won't help you.

So what you saying is,you got the same problem as 99% of us do. NOT MAKING ANY MONEY.LOL

I drive a covered pickup truck, and figured it cost me about .30/mile to run it. Based on that figure, and how many empty miles I'm driving, I realized I'm not making any money.

I'm not sure of the city you are working out of but courier work can be very good. Medical, Office Supply, Law Firm ETC.

Are we allowed to post other forums here?

    Running under a DBA

Relay. Very nice dispatchers, at least to your face.

In that case, there must be some money there then, no?

What defines courier vs expediting? We do medical, law firm type local things which mostly go to the car drivers. I know we've driven over 900 miles one way. I hauled an 1800 lbs load the other day. It's a high cap.
