Hey guys just had a quick question. Not sure if im in the right forum or not. I applied for a class B cdl job to work for my county. Got a call the next day to come in for an interview. They give you 16.80 hrly pay working from 7-3pm m-f. I was just wondering what you think and would like some feed back from anybody who works for the county or has ever worked. Thanks

My friend's dad got paid over 20/hr to sit in a truck on the side of the road most days. Passed him often lol. He worked there 20+ years and I'm sure is retired now. His son couldnt work there because of the whole "no family" allowed rule.

The only draw back they told me was i have to work there temp and they watch how i work before i get hired as full time. but they require 35 years of service and their retirement plan is 87.5 percent of your final salary. Which i think is amazing! The more i work flatbed in this cold winter the more i want to start working plowing ice and like you said sleeping. lol

Make your own retirement plan. My retirement plan is to buy land and plant trees as I go. Once I'm ready to retire, I sell it all to logging companies. Wont be "rich" but it's a much more solid plan than hoping to stay employed 35 years with the government and get a pension.

Well i agree with you but i just wanted to know the pros and cons of the job itself.

Sounds overall like a great job. New or late model trucks, probably excellent benefits, a pension (just about nonexistent nowadays), and the county will probably never go out of business, and you are home every night and weekend.
I don't see the negative unless you are more comfortable on the road or 40 hrs a week won't bring you enough money.
The only other jobs that I know of that are that good are union shops like abf. Good luck. -
I would love a job that i work 40 hrs a week. I just wanted to know how the temp - to full time works. thanks for the reply fld

After I served 20years in the Navy I looked into working for the government. I believe it's the best job around even it's local, state, or fed government. They do give you great job security. My opinion is it would be a decent job working for the county. Sometimes it looks like they are paying lower than other but the benefits are great. If it were me I'd run to that job.

I would get more info on how the temp thing works.
Some places just want to see your work ethic over 90 days to see if you are a good worker.
Some places (like ups) start you part time until something full time opens up.
I am sure they will be happy to clarify that for you. Best of luck! -
If I were you is jump on it , even if it's a temporary position you have your feet in the door & I'd bet there are probably a couple of people close to retirement! Plus the benefits are going to beat most of all the trucking companies out here right now !
