Hello,
I just joined this forum and currently looking into joining the trucking/transportation industry.
I have a few questions and also a few things that someone here maybe able to help me clarify.
However I let me fill you in a little as to my current situation. I am 24 years old have really no formal degree, also I am located in South Western Pennsylvania specifically in the Pittsburgh region.
I have found many schools there seems to be no lack of opportunity to obtain a CDL.
My questions more so surround the quality and the expertise of some schools. I was told many things by an acquaintance of mine. To avoid being lock into a school who requires more than a year contract of driving after completion of their course work. Also to stay away from qualcomm, and such devices that can limit you as a driver.
Like I said this guy is only an acquaintance, so I am unaware of his actual knowledge on the subject at hand. I know that he does drive and claims to be an owner operator.
The Few schools I have found were Keystone Diesel ( http://keystonediesel.net/ ) , and an internet company quality companies ( http://www.qualitycompaniesllc.com/driving-school )
Key stone Diesel is actually a local school right down the road to me, with many tuition payment options.
Quality companies is a "free" and from what it seems their closest location to me currently in Columbus Ohio.
I hope that I came to the right place to ask such questions. I also hope that if anyone here has some information they feel I could benefit from please to not hesitate to point me in the right direction. I appreciate any information you could give me. Perhaps I will see you out on the road someday, hopefully soon.
Thanks,
J

Every company uses qualcomm that is how you get ur load assignments....he is referencing elogs and that js what u want because does all the work for you. All u do is a button or two and it calculates everything...check the local umemployment office to see if they can point u to a good school.

If the school is a 160 hour course, most trucking companies will accept it.
Talk to the school administrator at both schools and ask which companies recruit from the schools.
Look for good flatbed or tanker companies; if they recruit from the schools then they are good schools.
You can call trucking companies and ask if they accept graduates from either school. Choose some good companies that pay well annually; here's a few:
System Transport
Maverick
Melton Truck Lines
Superior Carriers
Schneider tanker division

I'm not positive but I believe you are in the hiring area for Boyd Bros too JRAGE. They were great to my bf during his training period.
As for the Qualcomm part, my bf has done both and says both have their perks. He also says he'll like the elogs better once he gets used to it. -

Do the community colleges in your state offer training? Those are usually good places to get training.
