I live in Salt Lake City, Utah. After talking with Ethos several times, I was convinced that Schneider Bulk was the next move in my career and so I applied and was hired
On. The recruiter had told me that I had to be domicided in the state that my terminal was in. I was going to run out of Houston, so I would have to move to texas and at the tine they weren't offering relocation pay. I couldn't afford to move , pay all the fees to get a texas CDL, New haz mat and TWIC card and then try to find a place to live as well. I have been unemployed for 8 months so I couldn't even get an apartment office to return my phone walls. Plus I had to cash out my 401k with a previous employer so I had money to live on and you get hit pretty good on the taxes with that. So I decided to work for the schneider dryvan division out of North salt lake city and build up an employment history, save money and research the company more. They want you to stay at least 6 months in a division before ypu transfer to a different one and my 6 months with be feb 19th.

I actually had a load going to Houston today and I was going to visit the terminal, but it got canceled and I'm headed to Laredo instead. Last time I was home, I talked for 2 hours with a Bulk driver who had been with schneider 25 years (not all in bulk) and the one thing he said multiple times was "This isn't for everybody" and " "I have never been happier". The more I see and read about it, the more I believe that bulk is for me.

Awesome to hear man, I hope you find like I did that putting your time in and dealing with some of the BS in the dry van division for a while can lead to some good things down the road. Let us know how it goes!

I'm not sure that is accurate. I live in Atlanta but my home OC is Reserve, LA. I just think you have to live close to an approved parking location.

I have only been driving for a very short period of time. Bulk was not my first choice but now that I have done it I wouldn't want it any other way. In a way I believe it is easier than dry van. They don't put chemical plants in tiny strip malls where you have to try to back up through a parking lot full of mini vans driven by soccer moms. The people we deal with on a daily basis are more professional.

Oh, and Ethos was my trainer. We had fun but it's like a bad breakup with a girlfriend. He never calls to see how I'm doing. :)

    scythe08 Thanks this.

I don't drive for Schneider but I have pulled dry van, reefer and now tanker. Tanker is the best by far. The people are usually glad to see you cause we deal a lot in just in time freight. You get in and out. No waiting hours for a dock or lumpers. It's great.

ethos; Can you describe how much time you spend on top of the tank and what chores you are doing while up there? How long is the training for a newbie or someone needing a refresher? Thx

The only time I get on top of the tank is to open or close the manhole for loading or off loading. Other than that I can't really see any reason to be up there.

I thought you had to get up there daily for pre trip inspection?

I was never shown any of that. I climb up to make sure all the caps are on if I pick up a different trailer. I'll make sure it's closed and sealed if I grab a preloaded trailer. But our company we normally have the same trailer almost all week so after you look at it once there's no real reason to look at it again. At least in my opinion.
