If you are working in a position that requires you to log your driving time, then you are also required to log any other on duty time, even if it is at a job that has nothing to do with trucking. It's not "up to you" as suggested here. Keep in mind that if you're in an accident that causes damage to life or property, then your logs are going to be scrutinized far more deeply than what the DOT officer is going to do on the roadside. If they're not accurate, you're probably going to jail.

Toledo OH to Midlans MI, is less then 4hrs away, your on short haul. Don't bother with a log.

Unless, your going to be beyond 12 hrs on duty time, then you will have to fill out a log for that day and the 7 previous.

This is an interstate trip. Just because it's short doesn't mean he can just choose not to fill out logs.

A lot of incorrect information here. I drive one day per week, and you do NOT have to log the other 6 days in the log book.

In fact I just got pulled over for a random paperwork check this week, and the DOT officer asked what I do the other 6 days, I told him my work hours are all logged in the office. The only thing he "suggested" was to log just the previous day before driving, but was clear I did not have to.

As long as the hours are recorded somewhere, you are not required to log 6 off days if you only drive 1 day per week. I've been checked multiple times at roadside inspections and never had a problem with this, not once.

Your correct, I missed that...my mistake.....was looking only at the time portion.
The state lines have nothing to do with short or long haul.

Remember when in doubt, just make a run for it. Hit the accelerator and leave those coppers to eat your dust. Get on one nine and ask the bandit for some help. We will form up one of the convoys and see you safely back to mama.

There's 168 hours in 7 days driver. So yea its every 7 days. I can see how you made the mistake though I didn't know how many hours were actually in a week until this law came out.

Still say them dirty criminals in Washington need to revert back to the old laws. Well excluding the 30 minute break its nice only working 13.5 hour max/day. I'd still like to see an 11 drive max with a split sleeper and do away with the 14 hour rule. But alas that makes your log book to easy to cheat couldn't get that lucky.

You didn't mention what state this was in, and you don't have your location on your profile. So I will say this: That D.O.T. officer was wrong.
The NATIONAL law is...you are required to CARRY and be able to show 7 days logs at any given time. Your COMPANY is required to HOLD and be able to show 6 months of logs at any given time.
Even if there is absolutely nothing else to show on those previous 6 days...you have to be able to show just that.
You either came across an officer that doesn't know the regulations...or was just plain lazy. I'm guessing the latter.
