Long story, short version... Friend is out of work, no unemployment, and two children as a single dad. CDL classes would be perfect for him since the state would grant him the retraining fee's, however with 2 kids OTR is out of the question. I know I got lucky with a mom n pa operation, but those are far and few today. Is there any hope for him in the Food/Beverage delv field or any other ideas that would get him home daily/bi-daily without experience?

    Thanks!

It will be hard to find a job with no OTR experience but I do know that Coca Cola will hire someone as long as they have a CDL. They will "train" them.

Also, where in the country is he? Here in the DFW area of Texas we have the Barnett Shale going on and supposedly a lot of the companies hire local drivers with no driving experience. I would imagine the same holds true in other areas of the country where gas/oil production is booming.

Tell him to try the local beer/beverage companies , plus the grocery store chains. If there is a fast food distributor close by try them..I see where you are SW of Chicago....GSF a fast food distributor has locations in Lemont and Oak Brook...don't know how close they are to your friend , but definitely worth a look...I worked for them for 33 years great place.

Budweiser and coke usually hire noobs but for crap money like 12hr. Cement is another choice. Get 6 months then a Hazmat doubles go LTL p&d. Some will hire with no exp just got to get lucky and look.

Well,2 kids I wouldnt recommend being away on the road all the time. Some of these training companies act like you have to go otr, thats your only option. Its not, look around for a new local privately owned company that doesnt really know what theyre doing yet.Maybe an established courier company starting to expand or wanting to expand to Semi's. Talk your way in.Or you can possibley get on at a local food delivery type place. Most people just want to drive and not do any physically demanding handling freight all day with a dolly. Some of these places arent picky about who they hire because they hire and fire every day. Somebody might look outstanding on paper, but after a week theyre down in their back and quit. They dont want to unload those big Pepsi Co2 tanks one in each hand 7-800 a day or go to 6 places a day to hand dolly a truck full of oranges and potatoes all day long into grocery stores, collect money and count stuff all day long.If he's ready to work long hard days and physically able to somebody will hire him. At least its not as dangerous as OTR,be home every night and probably off on most weekends.JMO

See now I think local is more dangerous than OTR.. city traffic all the time.. I went with a big company and got a dedicated right out of training.. I am home weekly, or can choose to stay out longer and make more money.. another in my orientation just out of school got on a net-ops where they are home every night, even got a trainer on net-ops so is home evry night during training...
Now, of course there is no guarantee that your friend will be abl to do that..

Well, Im just saying when your otr and new youre always traveling some where new all the time all thru the states and heavy on the interstates usually going 65 or so with a heavy load at night, inthe fog, tired a lot, construction etc. Usually when your local you dont drive as many miles, and a lot of slow speed areas, you start to know what exits are closed, where the traffic jams usually are , you become very familiar with where you're going.Usually drive less and in the daytime. Yes,your risk of getting in a low speed fender bender might be more ,or scraping a parked car in a parking lot.I'm just comparing the life and limb kind of danger. You know, for example your driving thru the hills of Truckee California, its foggy and dark, you have a 40,000 lb load, raining, you've been driving ten hours, newguy, never been on this road before. Going to be on a new road everyday.I did OTR a little didnt care for it,felt safer being on familiar roads everyday, daytime and slow speed areas driving local.
