A corporate attorney once told me the key is to understand we are a land of written laws. Right, wrong, morality and intent have no effect on a court ruling, only the exact meaning of the words.

 

The mechanical contractor I worked for had a lot issues in TX. We were told (by the insurance company) part the issue was some of the trucks had US-DOT #, others just TX-DOT# and one had none. This determined if the truck meet the intrastate or interstate or what ever rules.

Maybe the OP needs to just ask an attorney with transportation experience if he should carry a US or state # and what size trailer he can get, and under what rule.
