If you look at who is hiring trainees, you'll notice that most of them are hiring for OTR positions, if you could drive local and train, most people would not go OTR. Besides, the insurance companies have alot to do with that and it takes about two years to learn how to back into a dock without busting up the truck.

I haven't found that to be true.
Drive55cat pretty much summed it up.

Driving "local" can be, and often is, more difficult than OTR driving. Constant turning and a lot of backing. You'll see more of both in a day driving local than you will in a week, or more, OTR.

When an employer puts you behind the steering wheel of equipment costing around $100,000, and hauling freight that can easily exceed that amount, -- they tend to be a tad concerned that it will all remain in one piece.

Besides that, Florida isn't known for it's many Big truck truckin' opportunities. Not much freight comes out of Florida, compared to other states. Have you considered relocating to another state with more outbound freight?

I know our jacksonville guys stay busy running down to miami/keys.

but little if any of our trailers ever come out of florida with anything other than the occasional OSD claim.
