Ok... I got suckered into intermodal (hey at least it wasn't a Family Dollar account right?), and hate every second of it. Living in Wisconsin, I was hired as "regional" but I am doing freight between Green Bay and Chicago - "channel" freight. I talked to my manager, and the head guy in chicago, said I wanna do regional as I was hired for, got a phone call "hey next week we're going to dispatch you regional". Great! So the next week comes... I'm doing more channel freight (same customers I was at the previous weeks - 100% of them) only now I have appointment times instead of open appointments, and they call it "regional". No more miles, and now I can't run until I'm out of time I end up shutting down early because my appointment is a 9am live unload (and told regional will have more live loads/unloads - keep in mind same customers the day cab people are doing, except they call me regional and make me sleep in my truck to wait out appointments -what?!).
Furthermore - intermodal has junk equipment. Even their new equipment is mini-sleepers, not full size condos. Sorry, not interested in living in a shoebox 5 days a week.
The nail in the coffin though for me is these railyards. I don't mind them, except for the fact I spend hours there frequently doing chasis flips, repairs, etc. and get paid almost NOTHING for it.
I'm to the point I'd rather be away from home longer and get MILES than work half of my week for FREE.
So my question ... what are the odds of me being able to switch divisions at Schneider after a month or two? Or should I just start looking at another company? I really don't want to jump through all the new-hire hoops again, but I will if it means having more than 1200 miles a week.
Changing divisions?

Either change to bulk division or change companies, but be more careful about what you choose.

Uh, don't know much about your position, but Green Bay to Chicago seems pretty regional to me. When I was regional working out of Obetz, I would get dispatched up to Green Bay, down to St. Louis, over to New Jersey and down to Tennessee. Regional isn't local. I was home every weekend.
As far as switching, you normally have to wait 6 months before switching. IF this is your first driving job, I would caution you to jump ship. I hear a lot of drivers(new drivers) complain they aren't getting miles(no matter the company) but I think you may find(maybe not) that sometimes your mileage limitations are because you are new and don't know how to maximize your time. I know when I was new my miles were low until I learned more and suddenly I saw my miles go up by 500-600 a week.Skydivedavec Thanks this. -
Maybe I will start volunteering to work an extra day on the weekends - they have been offering $50 bonus if you work an extra day (intermodal we work 5 days a week typically) and I think I saw it was up to $75 this weekend. I could make some easy extra money that way anyway.
baha Thanks this. -
I asked so many questions when I was trying to decide what position I wanted to start with at Schneider. I have pages full of notes from talking to their different recruiters! Actually the reason I didn't go bulk was because I was told when you're unloading you gotta stand there and babysit the hoses for hours on end? Oh, and I didn't want to be climbing all over the top of a tanker in winter. lol

Takes about an hour max to unload liquid and maybe hour and half max for dry bulk. Easy money and you're training for good paying tanker jobs the rest of your career. $60K - $65K with most hazmat tanker companies.to truck or not to truck and Truckerswifey404 Thank this.

I think if you try hard enough they will let you switch. It will most likely be OTR van or tanker. If dbl wont do it for for you, get someone higher up. As long as your doing good, I can't see them letting you walk rather then switching you over. Just be firm with your wanting to change.

Don't bet on it.
I was doing Dollar Tree out here in Washington and wanted to switch over to intermodal.
After 6 months of doing DT I talked with the folks at intermodal about moving over to them, they wanted me and were all good with bringing me on board.
I talked with my driver manager at DT about giving notice and was shot down right there.
He said "I may not be able to let me go" and sure enough management above him said no, not till we can hire a few more drivers for the DT account I was told.
It wasn't long and I could see the writing on the wall, at the rate drivers quit the DT job I was never going to be able to leave DT and switch over, at least no in the foreseeable future.
After 8 months of it I found job with another company gave them 2 weeks notice then said adios. -
That was my original reason for thinking I would go tanker. How's the equipment in tanker? I seem to remember hearing their equipment is about as shabby as intermodal. lol

nope, tanker has better newer equiptment and idle isnt restricted as much if at all. Required to run the pumps !
