What "just in case" spare parts do you keep in your truck?

    Belt? Hoses? Wire? A spare injector? Maybe an alternator? What about tools?

    Im interested in what you keep under your bunk or in your tool box that you can swap out yourself in a TS or on the shoulder to keep more money in your pocket and help keep monkey hands off your truck.

    I hate giving money away for simple part swap outs I can do myself. Will this principle help me more than hurt out on the road?

    For parts I carry a alternator, 2 extra sets of fuel filters, belts, 6ft of heater hose, electrical wire, electrical connectors (heat shrink to match), baling wire (just in case), extra tandem hose spring, 2 brake line slice kits, duct tape, and assortments of nuts, bolts, and hose clamps.

    For my consumables I carry 4 bottles of PowerServ 911, 3 gals of oil, 4 gals of antifreeze, 1 gal of washer fluid, 2 cans starting fluid, 1 can brake clean, and a couple misc cans of spray lube. Oh yeah don't forget the bottle of hand cleaner and about 20 shop towels.

    As for tools I have full combination wrench set from 1/4 to 1 in, socket sets in 3/8 and 1/2 drive, screw drivers, cordless impact with bit set, punches, chisels, 3 lbs mini sledge, claw hammer, knife, tire gauge, 50ft air hose with quick coupler, air powered cutoff, 3/8 air impact gun, crow bar, 3 pry bars, propane torch, and a few other misc hand tools. I have the tools in a Cubby Buddy tool box that works really slick(http://www.16tonindustries.com/).

    pullingtrucker, I take it that you've saved a bit of money being able to get yourself out of a bind. Any noteworthy failures that come to mind? Care to share?

    I carry a spare belt tensioner for my Detroit 14l. It uses two identical ones, so one spare can go either way (I've had them fail on my truck, as well as several company trucks in the past). Also spare belts, fuel filters, bulbs, fuses, air hoses, and electrical pigtail. Still working on the spares inventory as well as the toolkit, like the truck itself it's a work in progress.

    Had a alternator give out going across PA that all the parts counters wanted $400+ for one. I limped it close to home and had my wife meet me with one that cost about $225 from my local parts shop. A

    lso had a few IVAs go out with shops wanting to charge $300+ as a base price. I swapped the actuators out in 20 mins and cost me about $90.

    My last truck the turbo compressor wheel blew apart and I replaced the turbo and cleaned out the intake/CAC in a truckstop parking lot. Saved me about $600 on that one and that even includes the taxi ride to get parts.

    There have been a few minor normal things (lights, wiring, and hoses) I have repaired while on the road too. When it is all said and done in my 17 years of driving (including 11 as a O/O) I have only needed one load rescued from me due to breakdown. That was from a headgasket I couldn't limp due to major coolant loss, heavy load, and typical PA terrain. The amount of hours and money I have saved from carrying tools and spare parts would be to hard to add up. My theory has always been to inspect the truck/trailer every weekend to spot issues early, but yet also be prepared in case something breaks on the road. Oh yeah...even when I bought my current truck brand new, I still bought a brand new alternator and belts that I stashed under the bunk before it left on the first load.

    I carry a pretty handy arrangement of tools in a tool box that I transfer from the truck to my jeep when home. An electrical repair tool box with wire, connectors, a wire stripper, crimping tool, meters, soldering tools etc. Air line repair box with couplers, fittings, hose and what not.

    Also bulk head fittings for the trailer glad hands, once I was unloading a mechanical removable neck double drop trailer and forgot to dump the air after the deck cleared my tractor tires and the deck dropped off my frame with a 53k tow motor on it, it wasn't bad but if I would've dumped the air in the tractor the trailer would've just sat on the ground and i could have just pulled out. Instead it dropped a couple of inches cracking the glad hands off. I had spares to replace but, I thought "what if the bulkhead fitting cracked off with the glad hand, those are probably much harder to find in a pinch" so I bought a few just in case.

    Headlights/taillights etc. Oil, coolant, brake cleaner, wd40, propane torch, fuel filters, hand cleaner, coveralls, gloves. I even carry one of those tyvek suits with a hood in case of a particularly nasty dirty job. Also a sheet of heavy plastic to lay on in case I have to lay on my back in a rest area or truck stop so I don't get pis from the parking lot all over my clothes:smt078

    I wonder if you can carry so much extra (in terms of parts and tools) that the weight becomes an issue?

    I carry a wrench set, a socket set, a tool box with screw drivers sets:(flats, phillips, allens, nut drivers) I carry specialized eectrical tools (volt meter, crimpers, wire strippers, cutters) 3M electrical tape X2, zip ties in a jar with all sizes, 50' air hose + tire pressure gauge
    Vise grips, torque wrench (never used before) oil/fuel filters wrench, duct tape, grinder with a bunch of polishing wheels and shining stuff.
    Electrical 3M spray cleaner/conditioner, WD-40, Starter fluid, bottle of alcohol, 1 gallon of schaeffer 2000 additive, 1 gallon ante-freeze, 2 gal water, huggies baby wipes (awesome for grease and surfaces or when done eating hot cheetos) flashlight, A/C D/C phone chargers, cover alls, extra ratchet cheater bar, + a bunch of flatbed equipment.
    Hydrocortisone cream, carmex lip balm, aveno blue hands lotion, 1st aid kit, cleaning supplies, 2 rolls of bounty, clorox wipes, lysol spray.
    Extra bulbs/tail lights/fuses..

    I may be forgetting something but if I remember I will list it..

    Lucar, no spare parts? Ecm, turbo, belts? I'm trying to decide how in depth I want my spare parts to be... I want as much as I should have, without being impractical.
