Hey guys just wondering how other people pay their employees and why. I have always just paid 30% of gross, easy to figure out but I notice around Llyod for example that most pay a hourly rate with overtime after 8.

I prefer small, unmarked bills with non-sequential serial numbers.

Oh wait, that's my hold-up note.

I don't know why any good driver with oilfield experience would work for a percentage, overtime is where the money is.

Percentage pay = low baller cut rate hauling.

I dunno... about seven years ago my husband worked for an o/o under Gibsons for 37%. We were pretty happy with those rates. It might depend
on the percentage. I pay a flat rate, so if there are trailer or truck issues - the drivers don't need to sweat it. If the roads are bad, they arent feeling rushed to get their load in - hence, my truck is safe and sound for another day! LOL!
If the driver gets over 10 loads, he gets a bonus and that is percentage based. If he consistently gets below 8 for no good reason - he will go on a straight percentage basis that might encourage him to be a bit more efficient.

I would have a hard time going back to hourly. I get paid by what I get done not by how long I take to do it. If I am paid hourly it is because the truck is billing hourly, that means I don't have to wait for overtime to be at $50 an hour.

Low baller hauling in my experience has nothing to do with how you pay. Some of the lowest around me are Gibson's/Johnstone who pay guys hourly.

Well that's good if you're making $50 an hour on percentage, most aren't and they don't get paid for delays, washing, tires, breakdowns etc.

How you pay is dependent on a few things. First thing to consider is, do you want to get away with paying as little as possible or do you want to pay your drivers as much as the job allows?. What kind of work is it?. is it X hours per day 7 days a week?, is it X hours a day but may be called out to do more for emergencies, is it steady or sporadic, is the truck paid $/hr, $/cube, $/load or $/day?. Best method of payment can be different depending on the job.
