Ain't that the truth!
It's also like trying to sell your used books on Amazon. You see sellers keep underbidding and underbidding each other to the point they forget about they will need enough money to package it, pay postage, and the time and gas to run it down to the post office. In the end, they may have sold the book, but they actually paid somebody to take it.
I now burn my old books, and have thought about burning the truck, too!

Getting their authority.

If someone has never worked for percentage, I don't recommend getting their authority. There are some costly lessons to learn and I feel it's better to learn them when you have a support network. Plus you get a feel of rates and what they should be so the authority holder is much more likely to turn a profit vs go bankrupt. If you have significant cash reserves, something that is not prevalent in this industry, you'll have a better shot at making the mileage pay to authority holder change. By significant, I mean $30,000 plus so you can absorb a major breakdown and avoid factoring companies.

And what no one seems to want to accept is that contract rates drive most of this. Large carriers don't look at it on a load to load basis. They look at the round on the load what averages are. If Dallas is only supporting $1.35 + fuel and they need $$1.70+ fuel then they are not going to bid inbound less than $2.05 inbound.
They also are going to be looking at monthly and quarterly averages.
Cute sayings like "say no to cheap freight" have hurt drivers. -

I've been thinking about "channeling" my energy into Zen meditation, cutting out caffeine and nicotine, but then I just fall asleep.
Also, I was doing pretty good by staying on regional runs in the Midwest and driving slow; then Mother Nature decided to get really mean and I ran out West. I shoulda just parked it and meditated some more! -
some of you talk about never factoring. but what's worse, 2-5% factor or 25% or whatever the rate may be being leased on to someone. like the blue star for instance.

Don't forget being leased on gives you a higher deadhead percentage, due to lazy, stubborn agents that don't give a #### if you deadhead or sit. You must use that carrier's agents. Many of the agents get worse rates than what an independent driver can negotiate.
