But... when you do that wouldn't cars from adjoining lanes moved to the empty space in your lane in front of you, one after another until one is right up in front of your bumper? And when you backed down some more, this would simply repeat? Especially in Chicago!

 

Actually that's a yes and no answer.

Yes cars will attempt to fill that void. But, they won't be right on your bumper if you maintain your speed, or slow down.

When the lane shifting starts, it's generally to get further down the road at a higher rate of speed. The majority will move on fairly quick.

I came out of Seatle the other day, with an entire truck length or more of space for most of the time. Was only doing about 15 mph. But no one tried to jam it up.

Hey Fred, I'm not doubting what you are saying here, but unless you have a clearly written accident report to back you up, with witnesses, here is what most safety departments, and insurance companies will be thinking:

"Ok, did he get rearended and pushed into the SUV, or did he rear end the SUV first, then get rearended by the other truck."

I hope the law enforcement accident report is very clear about the chain of events here!

 

Yep... they do. Only so many cars can go around you to fill that void though. And eventually they get far enough ahead where it doesn't matter—they'll even themselves out so the lanes are fairly even. Any lane switching after that is well ahead of you.

And speaking of heavy traffic, I made the mistake of trying to go east through Baton Rouge the other day... and while I'm crawling along, I start seeing bees flying around... lots of bees! Friggin buttloads of bees! In fact, a half a bazillion bees!

WTF?! Anyone else experience this phenomenon?

I have.
Maybe not a half bazillion, but probably half that many -- on I-5 in California. The local growers use bees to pollinate some of their crops. Dumb bees can't tell the difference betwixt a tree and a Big truck windshield.

If you saw a half a bazillion bees, there's a good chance they were illegal immigrant killer bees from south of the border -- moving north to do the jobs no Americanized bees want to do.

 

As I said before, since he was still in training the company probly just thinks he just did'nt pay attention and apply some of the most basic safety strategies. I definently agree with gettin a copy of the police report and see if it says you were pushed into the other vehicle or not. Just remember the person that puts something on your DAC report is the ONLY one who can recend it. If the company relys on their insurance company to report on their drivers then you might have a long battle ahead of you. Good Luck and try to keep us posted on the progress.

 

All I can say is good luck to you. I was in a preventable in my first month solo and was terminated. Now I cannot find a job anywhere. I am hoping that maybe I can get on with a tomato hauler next month but everything I am hearing is that I need to get 6 months experience driving something before I can get back on with a major carrier and because I do not have 3 months experience I am still a student.

 

I concure. However you spell that. A seven second following distance in ideal weather and traffic allows space for a controlled stop even for the guy tailgating you. If you had to stop quick it would still be preventable, if you got pushed in because you were too close to the vehicle in front. If you were stopped and got plowed into at 60 mph, i would first hope you were ok, as well as the vehicle in front of you then tell you might have had a chance to fight the termination.

Learn from this, slow down and leave more space. Good luck with the next company.
