I got a C15 475 hp that had a complete overhaul in November 2013. Been back to cat twice for oil leaks. My question is what would make it use a gallon of oil every other fill up? Also getting 3.8 to 4.0 miles per gallon. Going back to cat on the 10Th of February. please help. If I bump it up to a 500 hp will that make the fuel mileage come up. Its in a w900 kw with 13 spd trans.
Thanks
Mark

What was your fuel milage before the rebuild...?
Also don't waste your time having cat turn it up. When your ready go aftermarket...
And your oil usage hasn't gotten better after the leaks were fixed ? -
No the oil usage is worst. Fuel mileage was around 5.5.
I got a 625 hp cat that gets better then this truck. -
My guess on the fuel milage is they put the latest and greatest low nox update in the ECM .
If it's the same driver and loads something has changed .....
Oil usage I'm not sure about...
There are many around here that will know, hopefully they will chime in. -
They will use oil till it's broke in, but I'm sure you have over 10k miles on it so it should be broke in by now. The problem with cat doing the overhaul is the fact they use prepacked piston and liners, so it's a crap shoot on getting all 6 good.
-
They should do a oil use analysis on the truck and check air compressor and look for more leaks and yes the low fuel mileage is probably due to latest emissions in ecm update not much you can do about that but you can ask cat to go back to old one but they probably wont but never hurts to ask

I had an oil usage problem after an inframe similar to yours. engine then let go after 23,000 mi. oil usage was traced to the Cat reman head. all but one valve guide was above spec, multiple cracks in the deck etc... head was junk. FYI. contrary to common internet belief there are no updated low nox files for your engine. the only low nox updates were for engines built before 1/1/99.

A co worker did an inframe for a customer, cat platinum kit he made just a couple of trips with it using a couple of gallons per trip. ring never seated right and the head was junk. I basically inframed it again. the cat rep was telling me how the valves used to be ground and then lapped to seat. he said they no longer lap them in they pound in to seat, and guides are not always done. This was a 2ws.

I have a friend that is a cat dealer and he said cat has asked them to put the low nox settings in every truck that goes thru his shop. The EPA guys have also payed him a visit, because they heard his shop was turning engines up and doing EGR deletes,as he is also a cummins dealer.

Thanks for all the input. I think the rings didnt seat right. But Ill keep you updated when it comes out of CAT next week. It crazy you spend $28,000.00 for work and you get a ###### job.
