How was the engine broken in? Or was it broken in?

It don't matter how you break it in, it shouldn't use that much oil, chances are that one or more cyl. kits have a broken ring or oil control ring missing, or worse, unfortunately I have seen just about everything Cat could do wrong with what they call quality reman parts, but as they say that's why they have there warranty program in place, good luck with the problem because they will play it off until warranty runs out and you have to pay for it again, one more reason why the small guy is almost always right but nobody believes him.

Doesn't the kit have the piston and rings in the liner when it's shipped....? How much assembly time does it save ...? And they just stuff them in the block without checking the rings....?

I guess I don't trust things a lot, but I would have to pull the pistons out of the pack to make sure the rings are all there, in the right position, and oriented right before I installed them. Sliding a pre-assembled pack in is something I just can't do.

Another problem with pre-packed cylinders is how they are stored or shipped. They have to be vertical the whole time, never laid down or they will wear before even being installed.

Did they run it on a dyno after the overhaul?

Yes they are supposedly shipped pre- assembled. My dad had one rebuilt a few years ago and it was using oil afterwards. Guess what he found when he tore it down? One of the holes was missing the rings, thus why we do our own engines now.

It pays to pull the cyl packs apart and clean all the anti corrosion gunk off and check that the rings are installed correctly. Just another mass produced cat parts problem. If I were you I would get them to install the high load top ring when they do it this time.
With the packs pulled apart and cleaned properly and high load rings installed, I've never seen any oil usage.
Have heard rumors of IPD having a lot of oil usage problems with there parts and it got to the stage that they would not warranty it unless that you can prove it was run in on a Dyno.

As others have said before on this forum, take them straight out of the shop, hook the biggest load you can on, then head up a mountain, and do not idle them until those rings have bead in good.

    Heavyd Thanks this.
