Here is my list of things I would love to have all in one company. For your list, add an asterisk * at the end of your "want" if the company you currently drive for already provides that particular service. Some of these wants are unrealistic, so this is all in fun. If I could customize exactly what I would want in a trucking company, it would be the following:
1. Home daily
2. 1st or 2nd shift only
3. Off every weekend
4. Dry van (I have a reefer and the thing still wakes me up at night sometimes when it first cuts on)
5. minimum $1000 per week *
6. 100% no touch freight *
7. new equipment *
8. straight truck with sleeper
9. no govern
10. no forced dispatch
11. respectable dispatchers *
12. paid holidays
13. detention pay *
14. light loads
15. e-logs (I like elogs since I dont cheat on my HOS)
16. automatic * (dont want to drag my left leg across truck lot in the future)
17. No slip seating *
18. Rider policy (not just spouse but anyone)
That would be my dream company. The local jobs I always see seem to be 3rd shift only and you have to unload yourself and/or have crap pay.
What is your perfect trucking company?

I had all of those with a tanker company except the automatic and weekend one but I did have 1-2 days off a week. Had pete 379s with 13 speeds but I haven't ever driven a automatic so I don't know if I'd like it or not. Would run right across state line 2 hours 1 way twice a day. Made $1250 a week. Best job I've ever had. Then the news came they there were losing the contract because some dirt bag company wanted to haul it for next to nothing.

The place that I retired from in 2011 after 33 years there had these.....
1. home daily
3. Off every week-end (after you gained enough seniority to bid week-ends off )
5. minimum 1,000 per week...
7. new trucks and trailers every 3 years
11. respectful dispatchers ( most of the ones at the DC I worked were former drivers waiting to retire)
12. paid holidays ...(as a bonus if you were scheduled to run on a paid holiday you got the holiday day which was what the trip paid without any breakdowns + half the trip pay + 8 hours. some of those days would pay almost triple regular pay)
13. paid detention..we were paid our hourly rate of pay for breakdowns as soon as the breakdown began , when detained at a stop or back-haul pick-up point we were paid after the 1st hour hour til we were loaded
15. E-logs loved them...they not only kept the drivers honest they kept the dispatchers honest too. We were forced into them though had a terrible audit and in order to keep operating the company was required to put them into the trucks. Started with the KADEC...then switched over to the XATA
16. automatic transmission...we were getting a couple as I was retiring never drove one myself...
I'll add to this list.... some drivers had a 2 trip a week schedule. They went out delivered the route took their break in a company furnished motel , then returned to the yard after the break was over. Once in a while these routes would have a back-haul , which you were paid an extra $60 + waiting time for. Did this twice a week. I did one from Greensboro NC to Charleston SC for over 10 years , til I could bid on a really good 3 day run...One that ran Mon. then a short run on Tuesday , off Wed. , then the same route as Mon. on Thursday...then off FRI. Sat. & Sun.
Now this was delivering fast food....so it was work...but as long as you worked like you had some sense it wasn't that bad. some folks think that finger-printing a load is not for them , but it sure was good to me. I'm 65 now with zero health issues , and in better shape than guys half my age.Aireal, NewNashGuy and Scott Mac. Thank this. -
I will tell you my perfect job:
Day linehaul bid pulling doubles with a single axle daycab turned up to 75mph. Running wild, always different terminals and sleeping in hotels, staying out from monday to friday, but always back by friday night to go home. Teamster payscale and benefits with pension.
Oh, yeah, and the day cab is an old Mack with straight pipes and satellite radio. -
Why would you need a straight truck with a sleeper if you are home everyday or a rider policy. But don't let me mess up your wet dream.
