The primary thing you need to be aware of when using this method is that the relationship of psi of air to lbs. of weight is not linear. The attached photo is how most of the trailers I drag around are equipped. As you can see from the chart, at 3,000 lbs/axle the suspension air pressure is 10 psi = 300 lbs/psi, 9,000 lbs/axle is 35 psi = 257 lbs/psi, 15,000 lbs/axle is 62 psi = 242 lbs/psi, 21,000 lbs/axle is 89 psi = 234 lbs/psi. That's a difference in lbs/psi of almost 25% from 3,000 lbs to 21,000 lbs. If you're handy with a spreadsheet it isn't terribly difficult to whip up a chart, but just be aware of how air acts under compression.

We do a lot of field-loading without any hope of seeing a scale for several hundred kilometers in many cases, so we need to be fairly certain of the weight in case there is a road-side stop enroute or the only scale we do cross is an open weigh station. I have found this setup to be quite accurate most of the time.

i agree with you 100 percent. i should have included to do this in your weight range , 34,000 or 40,000. johnny

They have those for every model of trailer suspension.

No need for any special gauges. -
Yes, but you need a gauge of some kind to read the pressure. None of the trailers I haul have any "special" gauges, just a regular air gauge.
