I'm young, 18 years old. I've always have been intrigued by this type of career. Unfortunately I have no driving experience whatsoever, I know I'm way to young to be driving trucks and I only know how to drive a standard 5 speed. But I am curious as to how did YOU get into this career? What type of training/schooling do you need and how long does it take? Are there any jobs related to trucking that don't involve actually driving? Just so I can get "in"? I live in Buffalo, NY.
I know, it's definitely not easy. But I have plenty of time to decide on what to do.
...and my name's Jason. Nice to be here![]()

UPS, great place to start on the docks and work your way up.
Wish I had done so when I was your age ,UPS drivers do very well on the old pay scale.
You have a few years before you can get hired as a driver, no need to worry about CDL school at this point, not till you are early 20's.Marksteven and Sik_Life Thank this. -
Welcome Jason.Like the last post said, start out working docks. You can get a feel, and leg in the door.
See if you can get some ride along time, too. If you were down south,I could let you tag along with me.
Good luck, and keep that driving record CLEAN

I completely agree with this. Get on at UPS as a Loader or PT helper. eventually you can apply for a driver position (Parcel) Their full time wages are
the Highest in the industry. And thankfully you dont need a CDL for Parcel Trucks -
And if you have a nice tan and in those shorts???? According to many Cinemax movies I've seen, as a UPS driver or cable tv installer, you can have a great time in the process delivering packages to lonely women in upscale neighborhoods

In some states you can get a CDL and drive intrastate at 18. I don't know who would take a chance on you at that age with no experience, but maybe you could start on the docks and work your way into a yard-dog type position and then go from there. Who knows?
What ever you do, if this is a career you're serious about, do not under any circumstances get into the drivers seat of any vehicle if you've been drinking. Stay away from/don't get caught with any illegal drugs. -
How about going to. A community college and take diesel mechanics...get a job spinning wrenches on the big trucks .that way you know how to fix em and were you get a job will probably teach you to drive or at least pay for your training

As far as training/school goes do what all the above posters say and when you get closer to the legal age you can go to a Tech or community college. Going to one of these you may be able to get a grant or scholarship for it.

Then when your in your 20 s and wanna drive you are way ahead and have something to fall back onif you dont like driving or flop one over in the snow....

This is essential if you get out and drive like an 18 year old moron and screw up your driving record you will have a tough time finding a job when you are old enough. Best to start acting like a professional driver now and take your driving record seriously.KnoxFox23 Thanks this.
