Hi guys. Long time, no type!

I finished my training with AGS and got my CDL a lost 4 years ago. Applied and applied and couldn't find anything I liked. Another (non trucking) job came up and I left the CDL and trucking world behind until now.

My present job looks like it might be downsized, so I have rekindled my interest in trucking.

I contacted my old trainer, Sarge, at AGS and he quoted me a price of $1200 for a refresher course. It will consist of some refamiliarization with the pre-check, brake tests, etc. Then some driving to get the shifting down, with some backing practice.

Seems like a good deal, goodness knows I haven't done any driving since I got the CDL.

I have a friend in the gasoline industry that tells me once I get my HAZMAT endorsement, he will make some inquiries for me, see if he can get me something. I started the TSA paperwork, did the online portion, paid my fees and got fingerprinted yesterday. Supposedly, TSA will send me a mailing in 2-3 weeks with my approval. Then I go take the written test, and BAM, I am ready.

Getting excited. Always wanted to drive. I regret not looking harder 4 years ago when I got the CDL.

    Mike, you're the man!

I'm attending AGS right now (was in class with Sarge all this week, got my permit today, and start driving next week).

I went to AGS in part because I found this thread and your other posts while searching for info on Vegas schools. It not only led me to AGS which has been great, but your posts also led me to Bridge Counseling, who ended up paying for $3,000 of my training.

So thanks for all your helpful posts and best of luck getting back into trucking!

PS- You should know that AGS just moved their entire operation from Green Valley to west Vegas, so it's a little inconvenient for us Henderson-ites now. Still, the training itself has been way worth it so far.

Way to go Driver5. Yah, Bridge Counseling was a HUGE help. Not sure I would have my CDL without them. I am glad I was able to help ya out a little.

Do you have a job lined up? Does Sarge have any prospects for you? I have to admit that he didn't really help out as much as I thought he would when it came time for placement. He basically gave me some places to apply online that I could have found on my own.

But I may give him a shot at me refresher. Pricey, but no way any company worth driving for will give me a shot without some kind of refresher.

Keep in touch, let us know how you are doing. If you start your own thread, shoot me a message so I can follow you. And if you find some cool job out of Vegas here, and they need more drivers.....well think about giving me a shout!

    Good luck, man.

    Hey Mike,

Thanks for the well wishes. To answer your questions: Sarge had mentioned a few options with me about placement, but I'm already planning on heading up to North Dakota to work in the Bakken oilfields.

Interestingly enough, his head trainer Dale *just* got back from working up there, and said that there are now more than a dozen AGS students who he knows are working up there, and he said the pay is amazing. He offered to give me the numbers of a couple of them who got great jobs right out of school so I could get tips/advice from them directly, which I may do.

If you were intent on staying local, I've talked to a few guys who went to AGS and while some went the OTR option, several others got lucrative local gigs right out of school. One drives a truck for Republic Services for $28/hour, one hauls Haz-Mat between Phoenix and Vegas making good money, and another guy who graduated in December just got a nice flatbed gig.

So there are definitely jobs out there. I'll keep you posted if I hear of anything local.

Again, thanks for your help man!

Oh, to be single again. The oil fields gig sounds great. Good Luck up there.

Yah, I just started my HAZMAT paperwork, should get notified by TSA in less than 2 weeks, then take the test and get the endorsement. Would love a local gig. The Phoenix HAZMAT gig sounds like exactly what I am looking for. Will keep my ears open.

    Again, good luck!

So AGS sounds like the best experience?
