Getting a new rear end put in my 2005 Freightliner Columbia single-axle. When I asked shop guy what he planned to fill it with he said just good old fashioned 80-90 wt gear oil. It had synthetic in it before? Should I insist on the synthetic? When I said something about possible problems with mixing the two types he said not to worry he cleans it real good? What do you think? What is correct wt?

Ask him what the manufacturer of the rear end gear requires for oil . That should be synthetic....

I'd insist on putting it in yourself. I don't know if I would trust the shop guy.

No way, don't buy what he's selling on he will clean it real good. It is impossible to get all the old synthetic out, if the rears and axle is still attached to the truck. It's not worth the risk at all with something as small as putting the right oil in. Its not the end of the world if your not running synthetic but just the fact that the tech said not to worry he will clean it real good, puts up a red flag. Spend a few extra bucks for peace of mind.

SYN is best,,, I second the the guy is an idiot,,, if you use straight gear lube you will see fuel milage drop esp in the winter or cold days even summer days below 100 degrees. ive been told and don't know if its true that chevron synthetic is a blend of the two, a pure syn gear lube such as mobile makes or amsoil would be best and cross contamination between the 2 lube being a problem isn't real
