I'm looking to buy a tri axle flatbed for a customer. The agent wants a trailer with 10 ft spreads. I will be going into Ontario on occasion. Does the front lift axle need to be a steerable for ON? Also, would a tridem any better than a three axle spread? The loads can be up to 70,000 lbs in 10 ft. I moved a 55000 lbs load in 4 ft recently on my trailer. I have a standard tractor.

I was reading throughONTARIO REGULATION 413/05 VEHICLE WEIGHTS AND DIMENSIONS — FOR SAFE, PRODUCTIVE AND INFRASTRUCTURE-FRIENDLY VEHICLES and it seems as though the front lift axle does need to be steerable?

I am looking at a 2007 tri axle spread with a non steerable lift axle. I'd appreciate any advice.

Ontario trailers need to be SPIF to get full weight from your life axles... If you do not have steerable life axles and only have rigid axles then you will loose approx 3tons (6000lbs) per axle... So it's better just to run with a steer axle trailer so you can achieve full weights allowed on your axle...

You can have up to 26,000kgs (57,000lbs) on a tridem depending on your spread and you can have up to 44,650kg (98436lbs) on a tandem with 3rd steer axle and a load equalizing trailer (less if the axle doesn't self equalize).. Again these are maximum weights allowed so depending on your spreads and equalizing suspension your weight can decline a couple thousand lbs... Also your lift axle weights will also change depending on the width of your super singles or if you have regular tires...

They just extended the date for cutting the weights back on non spif trailers. The 07 you're looking at will be good til 2020 or so after 2015 you might have to buy a yearly permit but even that's not clear if its going to happen.

Special K is right.... One phase that reduce limits but yet 10 years later you no longer have the reduced weight limits.. Stupid government can't just stick to one rule... I guess maybe they did this so people we become compliant before they reached phase 4.. I dunno..

So yet looks like your 2007 is grandfathered until 2020 since it was built prior to July 2011..
