You HAVE to have liability AND Cargo, unless you can get someone to sign off that you're not liable for the cargo, the liability is a FEDERAL LAW. I'm surprised they let you have your DOT without liability on file, and if you do have it and cancel it, the DOT will yank your authority.
Or go haul for Uship till you get caught.... -
yeah you are right , I knew it but ins agent gave quote for liability and cargo 17k/year........ is any way to find cheaper ins?

If your trailer weighs over 10,000 pounds you will need a Class A CDL. You're really looking for trouble.

For a new carrier in New Jersey 17k is pretty good for insurance. My friend who bought my trucks 6 years ago just renewed his insurance for 2 trucks based out of Pennsylvania with no losses or claims for years and it was $18,000. Another friend in New York pays almost 30k a year for three little trucks and a storage yard.
Not to be rude but this is a business, if you can't charge enough and run legal with the correct insurance then you have no place in the industry, outlaw carriers are part of the reason our insurance is so high and it is so hard to make money when you are competing against guys without the correct authority, licenses, insurance, etc.sxdime Thanks this. -
I will try to be helpful here but I am worried it's just going to sound negative. Yes, you can get your numbers without insurance but insurance must be in effect within I think 20 days or you lose your filing fees and start all over. The numbers you got will not be active until your insurance and boc have been filed. You will need to spend that much money on insurance. Thats the bad. The good is that a good operation still makes money after paying that insurance. There is a lot of regulation out there. By coming to this forum it shows that your are trying to learn and that is good because learning on "this here 'puter' " is a lot less expensive than learning the hard way. Uncle Sam knows that even a dually and a wedge trailer can make money and he also knows that even a dually and a wedge trailer can be a serious safety risk. For those two reasons he is going to be in your business. Make sure that when he looks he likes what he sees. You came to the right place here looking for info. Good luck.

I had to have mine on file before I could get authority.
I pay about $15,000 for everything and I carry $500,000 cargo. You might want to shop around. -
I really people wouldn't post unless they actually knew what they were talking about.

What are the GVWRs of your truck and trailer? If your truck is 12k or less, you can trade the 53' for a 48' with a gvwr of 14k and you can run without CDL. You should be able to pick one up for whatever you sell the 53' for. Insurance of $1,000,000 liability and $100,000 cargo should be around $8000 per year with a new MC # and a clean record. you are in my neighborhood and I know that around here, if you are willing to put up with bad drivers, annoying customers, are willing to work at least 60 hrs per week and sleep in your truck at least twice a week, you can make a living. PM me and we can converse about what it takes.
