I can understand the length thing about using a Big Sleeper in Heavy Haul, But I would like to compare the weight of a Big Sleeper truck with the weight of your Heavy Haul truck. The weight difference is not as much as everyone is thinking I believe. PLEASE post:
Make Of Truck
Sleeper Size
Type of Frame(Double-Triple)
Weight of Truck
From past expierence with my previous Heavy Haul truck the estimated weight difference between it and a Big Sleeper truck is less than 5,000#'s, I believe everyone is thinking that the Big Sleeper truck and the 55 ton RGN will weigh close to legal gross and that is not the case. I am willing to lose a load every now and then if the shipper dont like my rate because it has to be permitted. I already planned on buying a heavier class of license plate and all the Blanket Permits I could in the states I plan to travel to help compensate for the additional weight. We all lose loads every now and then,I will just need the time to prove that cheaper is not always better, even in trucking. There are a lot of shippers that have already found that out the hard way. If you were a shipper with a load worth hundreds of thousands of dollars or maybe millions,For an additional $500.00 wouldnt it be worth going with a carrier that will never leave the load un attended,That will not have to be delayed by food stops, hygene stops, bathroom breaks and more. If it gets down to it and my sleeper is causing me not to get a load over $500.00 worth of fees I will deduct that from my rate because I quoted a rate that gave me some flexability to do things like that. I have never and will not start working cheap!!! If you get ALL the loads in your short wheelbase light weight truck,I will just do without I guess. But I dont think anyone can do all the loads themselves. There will always be something somewhere that needs moving and that will be mine at my terms and rate. If the shipper wants me to move there load and because of the equipment I have to offer it requires a permit,That is the cost of doing business,If they dont like my rate they can find some one else,But that happens even when you run a day cab truck!! It is part of my job to sell myself and my equipment to the customer,They are buying my services at MY Rate and Terms. They are free to shop,Some people are never happy with the cost,I dont care if you move it for free,Pay them $500.00,take them to lunch and pay for there kids college education, they are going to complain,It's just some peoples nature. But if you want your load moved by an expierenced professional with modern well maintained equipment at a fair rate to BOTH of us then I am your man.WE shouldnt have to give our services away,We should be the ones telling them how much it cost to move it based on the job, distance, diffuculty, additional cost,ETC. I NEVER call about a shipment and ask what it pays!!! I always get the details and figure my cost and tell them what it takes for me to move it. I realize I have been home a couple of years,But my business practices are going to remain the same when I return. I am just going to return in a little different kind of equipment than most everybody else. But after doing additional research I have found I am not alone in my big sleeper plans,There are quite a few out there that are working without any problem>Thanks for the comments and keep them coming!!!
I am now pricing a New Glider and Sleeper versus a new to me 4 year old used truck with 1.2 million miles on it. Depending on the cost difference I may decide to go that way and at least I can get exactly what I want and WARRANTYS to go along with it. The warranty alone could be worth 10's of thousands of dollares to me over buying used as a ttruck with 1.2 is ready for a out of frame soon, especially hauling heavy!!! It may be in my best interest to purchase a new glider and sleeper,That way I can get my 20 years out of it and with me specing the Sleeper I can have it built EXACTLY the way I want and may be able to cut down on the length a little and that would cut down on the weight as well. Stay Tuned,There will be more questions and opinions as well as updates as they come!!! Robert
another Heavy Haul Question,Opinion!!!

It's not about weighing a little more or charging a little more. It's about adding complications for the heck of it.
How happy will you be when the state tells you that because you're over a certain weight by 2-3,000 pounds that you're considered a super load and that you'll need an extra 7-10 days to get your permit? You sure will use the heck out of that sleeper during those days. It'll be fun when you add an extra escort for just about every load, yeah sure you can run your own escort car, but then you need to make sure you're certified in each state and maintain a separate insurance.
It'd basically be the equivilant of bringing a cat D10 to push down a palm tree on your front lawn, sure you'll get the job done, but why in the world would you bring such a large piece of equipment with you could do it with a mini dozer or excavator.
Comfort is a luxury out in the road, but $50/night for hotels with hot breakfast and every now and then a hot tub sure beats adding weight, fuel, more expensive permits, more detours, more restrictions, more escorts, basically all around more work, for the same pay. It's just not efficient. $500 is nothing in heavy haul, the difference it would cost you in many loads is thousands.
If you must have this sleeper, I think you should stick with freight that won't make this so complicated, buy a dry van and run coast to coast with light weight loads.
I'm not even telling you to trim the weight so you can haul cheap freight! Trim it so you maximize your profits. The way you're going to be set up, you're going to be an 8 axle set up with a 7 axle capacity, but with all the 8 axle expenses. Just my $0.02 -
2014 Western Star 4900 SB 4 axle, double frame, 18 spd, 18k front axle, 82" Sleeper, 269" WB, 2 125g fuel tanks all m crap in a 3 door box - about 26,500 # plus my 55 Ton Mechanical 29' well rgn with outriggers 27000 - total just under 54000 lbs empty. My biggest issue so far is the OK overweight permits are a killer on cost, sometimes it is not practical to haul 35-60K freight as the permit can be between $400-600 and the 5-6 axle guys can get by with permits that are half the cost or less.

With that wheel base your going to cause yourself a lot of grief just trying to maneuver around most equipment dealers not to mention truckstops.
I wouldn't go over 18k steer axle, 1 steer box and w/hydraulic assist on right side. That long WB will never see 20k up front. Also I've ordered 54" spread on drives/lift last 2 trucks, lets the weight roll forward much easier.
