I have an MC number that I have "parked". It is inactive because I discontinued insurance. Not sure all load boards research to see if you have an active number or not. If you are looking for the opportunity to book loads, if it was me in your shoes, I explain to your management of your intentions. To keep truck running. My guess they would like the oversight of the loads you book and would want their cut, percentage.
Who is going to do your paperwork, broker packets, rate confirmations.
I would think your current contract does not allow you to trip lease. That is what you would be doing with yourself if you get own authority.
I have heard of your situation and they way it worked, the company allowed driver to look for loads but everything went thru dispatch. Such as driver would find load and give information to dispatch and the company would handle all paperwork and invoicing. That allowed the flexibility the driver wanted and the oversight the company desired.

If they allow you to haul for brokers they should allow you to use there numbers to subscribe to boards. Call DAT or Internet Truckstop and they can tell you too. Subscriptions are 49 and 35 a month to those

You can access loadboards with a usdot number. You do not need an mc number. I have a dot and im registered with getloaded and truckersedge loadboard

carriers allow drivers to pick their own loads off the boards. but the carrier still collects the money and they pay you. they also know the credit risk. if a broker isn't good. the carrier won't allow you to haul the load.
the carrier also gets a percentage. wether you haul loads from their agents or off the board. they also don't have loads in every region of the country. (williston, nd. for instance) sometimes you have to look at the public board. or spend the day bouncing to a load the carrier does have.
if the truck isn't hauling a load. no one makes money. the carrier your leased on to. might get a little antsy when your sitting longer then a weekend.
i prefer working for a carrier that DOESN'T confine me to their own board or customers. some customers i just don't want to bounce that far. and some customers i just don't want to haul. so you have more flexibility.281ric Thanks this. -
