OK guys, I signed off on the papers for the following truck. Haven't given them the deposit yet. That will be taking place tomorrow. Here are the details on the truck:
2010 Freightliner Cascadia
474,000 miles
DD15 at 455HP, they will upgrade it to 475HP for me (included in the deal)
9 speed transmission, they will convert it to 13 speed for me (included in the deal)
It's midroof XT with fairings on top and sides (-ex HEYL Truck)
Carrier APU-It turned on for 2 minutes, turned off and threw a message "VOLTAGE LOW, CHECK ENGINE" (they will fix)
Front Tires: Bridgestone 80%
Rear Tires: Bridgestone recaps new
They said they will clean out the DPF and fix the small issues I mentioned which were:
-Air leaking from air vent in the sleeper on the left (driver) side
-Left slide blinker needs to be tightened (screwed up properly)
-Alignment (steers to the right a little bit, they agreed to fix it)
-Windshield wipers need to be replaced, they will replace them
-It's missing cup holders which go on right side of driver seat (salesmen said he will order the part)
Final Price 62k. I have to put 17k down. It was originally listed for 63.9k He said they spent $4,400 on the truck when it got to their dealer, and the guy won't budge on the price. He's going to give me the invoice tomorrow on what all they spent the money on.
So what you guys think? He won't budge on the price because he said it's going to be a 13 speed and there aren't many of them in the market for sale. I don't think I am getting a good deal, I think I'm just getting the market price.
2010 Freightliner Cascadia for 62k, good deal?

Sounds like buying an over weight hooker with small boobs and flatulence issues. "she doesn't look like much now but wait till I have her rebuilt and get her out of the shop"! You might not want to listen to me though, I'm being more cynical than usual .
Adamjoseph1135 and mrbmg Thank this. -
If you already signed off then it's a little late. Just go with it an'd don't look back.

I'm assuming it comes with a warranty. Find out if you're getting a new DPF filter or if they're just swapping in a used one that's been cleaned out. How bad is that steering to the right? Because I'm a bit skeptical that toe in/toe out is the cause of it. Was there any play in the steering column? Any slack in the kingpin bearings? When was the dosing injector last serviced? Did they hook up the diagnostic computer after your test drive and check for codes (active and inactive)?
JazzTX Thanks this. -
@skellr: I can still back out of it. Only a $500 loss.
@Witchinghour: Thank you for your informative reply Sir! I will check on the things that you have mentioned tomorrow. The steer to the right wasn't that bad. When going West bound, it would steer to right, even switched to anther lane to make sure it wasn't the road. When coming back on the same HWY east bound, it kind of went away. The truck was at about 65 MPH, with barely any wind. There wasn't any play in the steering, I will check out the other things you mentioned (kingpin bearings, etc) The warranty expires in 25k miles, and it's only transferrable if I pay them the $500. Warranty on transmission & rear end up to 750k miles. I told them that I wanted a new DPF Filter, we will find out tomorrow on the full details. -
If Heyl has let It go there is a reason.474,000 is way to early for them to let it go.why do you need a 13 speed right now, that can be done once you make some money, why do you need 475 HP, the apu is most likely worn out, Have you even had the ecm downloaded to check all the problems it's had, I bet they will say it's been wiped, you would want the whole history of the ecm, like regens, fault codes, emergency stops pto hr's,etc. also the dealer can show you any invoice for repairs, find out what they were and take a look for your self. also they will come down on the price. Try walk and see what they do.I would call a lawyer first and see where you stand on you down payment, they shouldn't charge you ,And never give any dealer that much down. and remember if a dealer accepts you offer you paying to much ( as a rule of thumb ) Good Luck, let us know how it comes out if you buy and if they fix everthing................

I wouldn't be so surprised by that. A lot of carriers have deals with the dealerships and manufacturers.. it'll be something like the company commits to purchasing X number of trucks annually and the dealership guarantees Y amount of money for a trade-in... those deals come with a quota, and if the dealership says, "we can't give you that amount for this truck", then the company will find one which they can get that amount for... what happens with the rejected trucks... depends on the company. In some cases, they might get reconfigured into day cabs or used as is for short hauls, or they might become lease purchase trucks, or the company might auction them off directly.

@mkmac: First of all thanks for your reply. The reason why I'm switching it to 13 speed is because all it is, is a extra $500 kit that EATON sells. You have to change the whole shifter, run an extra air line to the transmission, and I believe add a small part to the transmission (correct me if I'm wrong on the part). I am having the guy tune it to 475HP because he is going to do it for free, if I do it in the future, Freightliner quoted me $1,600 to change HP rating (anywhere from 455 to 505). My old man is going to be driving this truck from California to TX hauling a 53' reefer. I have several trucks, when I drove my Freightliner with Detroit 60 Series 430HP with 10 speed, I hated the trip. When I took my Pete with Cummins ISX 475HP with 13 speed, that same trip was a whole lot better and enjoyable. I know you can't compare apples to oranges, but in my opinion the 13 speed would work better than a 10 speed with all those mountains/hills in California and Arizona. I do see that Heyl trades in trucks every 4 years or whenever they hit 500k miles. I do see a lot of fleets upgrading trucks in 2014 with the new Cascadia Evolution being out and the New KW t680 being out as well. Honestly I don't know, the only person knows is probably the maintenance guys at Heyl.

@WitchingHour: That makes sense and I was thinking something similar.

Yes I've heard the kits for the tranny are 500 to 1000, But when I had my HP done on a cummins it took the guy about 10 min with his computer, If this dealer does a lot of Heyl then your most likely right, but I would still get the ECM down loaded......
