The real answer is to have a truck slowdown. Everyone run 50 MPM for two weeks. Even guys who don't want to be part of it will be forced to slow down because of the traffic. Two weeks of loads delivering late and cars stuck in traffic jams will catch the attention of both the press and the government. Company drivers can participate and blame the delays on the truck slowdown. We need congress to mandate a minimum frieght rate and to create a fuel surcharge program that must be clearly shown on all paperwork and must under penality of law be paid or company paying for the fuel. This surcharge needs to be based on practical miles for the load, not a percentage of frieght bill.
A Slowdown is the way to go. Instead of sitting home wondering if a shutdown is working, a slowdown keeps you on the road and keeps you actively involved. Trucks driving 50 mph on the interstates will catch the attention of the news and maybe get the support of some 4 wheelers who are also feeling the effects of the high prices.
No one will be forced out of business with a slowdown and the government can't say goods are aren't getting delivered, but late loads will show the importance trucks play in this economy.
When I get home this weekend I'm putting up a web site. I'll add a board to get imput.
I was an owner-operator for 13 years, now a company driver. We all need more money, I'm making less than I did 20 years ago.
A SLOWDOWN not a SHUTDOWN

I think my customer would be upset at me since i run all teams and i do get full FSC and then my guys dont do the job would put me out of business as well...but we all for the shutdown or vacation and my customers do understand the time right now -
That's the nice thing about a slowdown. If your truck in stuck behind others who are running slow I guess your truck will be part of it. I think your shipper would understand you can't fly over slow moving traffic.

I don't think its a good idea. That will cause chaos and tons of wrecks with impatient 4-wheelers. Not the best publicity for us. Plus I'm not running 50mph on the big road....

I think it's a great idea, but that'll never happen. Everyone's in way to much of a hurry these days unfortunately.

I will agree that a truck slowdown will also get attention. If you have a load or have to take one, a slowdown will get attention by snarling up traffic, maybe cause some accidents from some who wish to challenge the forces of gravity with idiotic maneuvers. But in the end it may bite you the trucker. If you are late with freight no matter if it is unavoidable or deliberate, you may find out you will get paid the same way. Or maybe you will end up having your insurance having to pay for the load if it was time sensitive and you failed to meet the terms. If you are in the position that you can not support the shut down or slow down because you are afraid of loosing your job or your truck or home or what ever. You need to make the right decision for your self. Maybe I am lucky. My wife is complaining about us not working because of the rates that I have set and for the last couple of days we have hauled nothing compared to what we normally do. It took some time for her to understand why I am refusing work now. I am not going to move freight for anyone when just the cost of fuel is now over 30% of the load. This is my choice, and I will sit. I can be adding more stainless to my so called lawn ornaments. I think sooner or later you will see if we start making major progress, the government start implementing all the real scabs of the trucking industry. THE SUBSIDIZED DIVISION and you know who they are and they are probably the same ones to say this will never work. But they will also work for nothing like they have been and complain like they have that they have nothing. Like I said, I am lucky. I own my home, cars, trucks in fact everything here. I still have to pay utilities and taxes. I am no better than anyone out here on gods green earth, I still have to pull my pants down to go to the bathroom just like anyone else. I think its time for us to unite and stand firm since our government can't or so chooses.

I said it somewhere else, not sure if it was here or not, but I've already been contacted 3 times by 2 different companies trying to gather scab drivers. No thanks.
