Yes and no. It's layoff time but also guys quit for summer, change jobs if they are sick of the BS or a company fancies hiring them, guys move for promotion/more $. Always a chance you may get hired on.

Lots of variables. May or June are maybe more promising than earlier in spring.

    Hi everybody,

Just another 28 year old guy with dreams of a new life out west. I stumbled on this thread a little while ago and have been reading through it. A lot of useful information for a new guy like myself. So big thanks to all the contributors!

I'm currently living in Quebec and got my class 1 with manual transmission and air brake endorsements a few months ago. I have about 1.5 months of experience driving OTR between Ontario-Quebec-Maritimes and US Northeast regions. My driving school has a partnership with a transport company and I was lucky enough to get a sort of driving internship after passing my exam.

After successfully completing my training phase with the company I had the option to stay on-board and become a full employee. For various reasons I have decided that I wanted to keep my options open and take a look at opportunities out west.

I have applied online a couple weeks ago to companies like Calfrac, Canyon and Trican for junior-level field positions. I haven't heard anything back and so was wondering what kind of experience level these companies are looking for these days?

As mentioned in earlier posts, there is the issue of spring breakup coming up. I was planning on heading to Grande Prairie within the next couple weeks to get my oil field tickets (H2S alive, first aid, GODI.. I have TDG, PST and WHMIS) and try my luck finding companies with "now hiring" signs.

I'm wondering if I should just wait to hear back from one of the pressure pumping companies I applied to or maybe just hold off heading west until after spring breakup?

Also I'm fully mobile and ready to relocate pretty much anywhere in Canada.

Your insights would be most appreciated.

    Cheers!

    Adrian

I would tend to sit tight down east til the middle of June. The odds of a green hand getting hired between now and break up are not that hot IMHO. If you got incredibly lucky and got hired, your income from April 1 to end of June would probably be less than what you could make at your present job. Stick it for a couple m9nths. Maybe work on safety courses. H2S first aid etc. WHMIS and TDG have to be d9ne by the company so don't waste time and money

    freedom4me Thanks this.

Thanks nitrogen, I was thinking similarly. I'll sit tight a bit and trade the freezing cold for mud and bugs hehe.

Can anyone tell me what a cement twin operator does? The job description doesn't say anything about it and is it good pay? Anyone know what the average income is for one of these guys?

if you have to ask, you don't qualify. In any case it is a twin engine, twin blending and pumping unit. it pumps cement downhole, and occasionally some remedial work. most guys start as cement bulk haulers, move into single pumps, then double pump or supervisor

Apparently I do qualify because I got a job offer. There's nothing wrong with asking questions, this is what this forum is for. There was no info except a general universal job description for all the positions with the company.

    Appreciate the information, thank you.

Wow what company. Generally guys have to work their way up. It's not much different than running a single, but the jobs tend to be larger and more stuff going on at once.

Must be a tiny operation or a company with too many turnovers. Sanjel made you bulk for at least 6-8 months to get the feel for things on site, and to see if you'd stick around, before they even considered letting people start to learn a pump.
