Hello all, I just inherited a 2005 Frieghtliner Columbia (CAT). I've been behind the wheel for about 2 days now and here come the problems.
Main issue: Truck will not shut off.
Sub issues: On second day I noticed a funny smell near the smoke stacks and the battery, smells like rotten eggs or something.
This morning the radio was blinking on and off and the gauges were sweeping as if I had just turned on the ignition. Problem is the key wasn't in and the truck was off. I notice a code that said "no abs".
I had the truck inspected at TA literally an hour after I got it and now 2 days later the problems have just been rolling in. During my own pretrips I noticed that there is a Cobra 400watt inverter wired directly to the battery with 10 gauge copper wire and no fuse. Is it safe to rule out the inverter?
Any help is appreciated, im nowhere near any mechanics and my truck has been running for 5 hours now. Key in pocket, engine still running.
My truck will not shut off, has funny smell and unusual occurrences on the dash. Any

Rotten Eggs is not good close to the battery's... you may have a one or a few bad ones... they are starting to short out.
Disconnect the inverter and see if the issue goes away, but I would still have all the batteries checked again under a load test.
Those little handheld boxes they use to test don't put enough of a load on the batteries. I had a dead battery in my car, would not even crack it over. They kept telling me nothing wrong with it. They finally put it on a load test and came back about 10 minutes later and asked if that was my battery on the machine. It kind of blew up. Gee Whizz... must have been bad.
If you can, replace all the batteries.. -
Go out and disconnect the batteries RIGHT NOW !!!
mrbmg and CondoCruiser Thank this. -
your problem is one of 2 things.#1 the aux.pdm (fuse box)located behind driver seat in the b pillar.$90 ish from freightliner.water leaks from upper bunk window, down pillar into fuse box.#2 see if you have an old qualcom antenna cable still hanging on the rear upper driver outside of cab.if you do,the pins in the cable are going to be green and corroded.quick fix is to snip cable and cover until you have time to properly remove.tell that to "techs"at T/A and then charge them $200 diagnostic fee.good luck.

could just be a bad key switch i had a truck with a cat do that key switch fixed it plus it sounds like you have a bad battery or so
CondoCruiser Thanks this. -
sorry.by the way pull fuse marked "ecm power"middle row of fuse box to turn engine off.don't forget to put back in when you want to re-start.

The wiring from firewall to eng. go bad at same time as rear fuse panel, A/C will stop next leave cover off top of dash, so you can turn off eng. fast in emerg.

It sounds like multiple issues. Your major concern is the truck still being HOT while parked. I would disconnect the negative until you get the troubleshooting complete. Killing the ECM is just cutting power to it and not other circuits if there is a short.
The inverter should have a 40 amp fuse by the connections. I don't think that's a problem. Though 10 AWG wire is rated for 30 amps you'll never pull that with a 400 watt inverter. You can swap the inverter fuse to a 30 amp to make sure you don't pull more than the wire rating. But that fuse doesn't protect the wire to the battery. You should put a second fuse at the battery which they sell specifically for inverters. Amazon sells them cheap. Double check where the wire goes through the floor. It should be near the batteries and improper installs the insulation can get rubbed off the wire there. Put you a rubber grommet and/or silicone around the wire there if he hasn't already.
Isolate your batteries by removing all the cables and do a voltage check on each. Any bad battery the voltage will be noticeably lower than the rest.
The keep running means your ECM is staying hot. If it's not a harness issue than the ignition switch is bad.
No ABS is probably a bad or dirty sensor. Any fault and the ABS system shuts down.baha Thanks this. -
If you're getting a rotten egg smell, open the battery box and figure out which battery (or batteries), it is. Disconnect it. If you keep that battery hooked up, you could ruin your other batteries, hose your alternator, or start things on fire. Don't wait.
