Tide fan, get ready for a culture shock. Regarding things to have:
Several changes of clothes, boots rain gear/coat until spring, gloves, flaslight. Once you get settled in you will figure the rest out. Don't hesitate to ask, welcome aboard.

Thanks Mattaponi Guard, I will probably take you up on that offer for future guidance. I drove for approximately 6 months a few years ago, and it was definitely an eye opener. This go around it will be permanent, so gathering advice from others who have been there will be paramount.

Anybody know how much a trainer makes at Van Wyke? Just a average will do.Is the trainer paid all the miles,or a flat rate,do you run like a super single team, then progress into a full team, till trainee is ready for his own truck.Any information to help me along in my decision making process would surely be appreciated.thx

As a trainer you get paid for the loads the truck runs. How you run is largely a matter of discretion. However, I volunteered to be a trainer (I trained one student, long story) because I'd seen full team training in action, and it's the dumbest thing ever. To properly train a brand new driver (if you want to be a trainer) you have to spend a number of days running the truck as a single so that you're both rested and able to communicate. Then you can progress to super-single or full team depending on the student.

But yeah, the trainer gets paid on total revenue, which is naturally more if since you're not as limited by hours restrictions.

To add to what Mark said, I don't think Van Wyk does enough training that you could rely on training for a continuous revenue boost, nor does it seem to be set up as a financial incentive in the first place. It's not a training company.

Hi everyone. Still lurking. Spent the last week in a hotel in Harrisburg trying to help get that rail yard caught up. They are 500 deliveries behind! Got my 29 turned up to big radio status at DTB in Carlisle so holler if you think you see me. "My" current truck is 348071, but it's still in the shop so tomorrow I'll be driving 212 again.

    Drive fast, take chances!

No but I have one of those I'd like to get turned up and put in my car. It's a 29 NW ST WB.

So, I get a call from Jeanne this morning and she says she has bad news. Caught off guard a bit, I ask what the bad news is and she informs me that due to my location of residence she would be unable to get me home. Now this was a bit of a surprise. For starters, the company website indicates that they hire for the entire state of Virginia and secondly I specifically asked this question during the recruitment process. I have spoken with several other carriers over the past month in a half and some stated that I was not within their hiring area and others indicated that I would need to park the truck for my home time either at the terminal or near interstate 95. So, I specifically asked if I would be able to bring the truck home and I was assured that I would definitely be able to bring the truck home. I am disappointed that I will not be able to come to work for Van Wyk, it truly does seem like a great company to work for and that they really do take care of their drivers. The part that is most frustrating is the fact that after asking specific questions and then receiving assurance I took that at face value and submitted my resignation with my current employer. Now, a week later I not only have to begin the search for GOOD employment I also have to drag myself into the bosses office and ask if I can have my job back, the same job I told him I longer wanted just a week ago. Everyone here has been extremely informative and helpful and even my recruiter Jeanne was very nice and informative, I just wish that all information that was needed to meet my needs could have been available to her prior to her making assurance that in time turned out not to be. Best of luck to each and everyone of you, and be safe.

Wow I hope you get your old job back. So what's the next step? Keep looking at trucking or take a step back?

i was fortunate, I have a job that I have a knack for with specialized training so the boss was glad to have me stay on. Had this been 20 years earlier, I would have most likely stormed in, told them all the reasons I was leaving and just quit. Grateful for maturity!
No, I definitely want to get into trucking and my family is on board with the intention of owning our own equipment in the future. So, it's back to researching to find the right company. No going backwards, patience and diligence going forward.
