The shop where my truck sits right now is sold on the 3406E and C-15/16 engines. They have a lot of customers hauling big loads with those engines and they just keep humming along. They work on everything but have developed a fondness for Bulldozer Yellow. Even the shop foreman, who was always a Cummins guy, is now drinking the yellow kool-aid.
they tell me even an ACCERT engine can be pretty good... even better, from what I hear, with a single turbo.
I believe I could have gotten another 3-500,000 miles out of my E model if a liner hadn't taken a dive... everything looked that good.
I've never badmouthed many Cummins engines... drove a lot of trucks with them under the hood. My kid had an '00 379 that just about put him under and that truck had an ISX 565 in it. The Pete store finally took it back, and gave my kid his money back and paid him for some of his downtime, after he filed a lawsuit against the dealer, Cummins and Peterbilt.
I like the Series 60, too. Had great luck with my FLD with the little 11liter engine.
Unless I wreck my present ride it will last me until I decide to park it for good...
87 KW, would you buy this truck?

I have nothing against cummins for sure, I am fixing to put a 12 valve in my 85 Chevy, I think that 12 valve is the finest engine ever put in a pickup.

Good engine...I'd like to have on in my old Dodge pickup... saw a few on Craig's List recently for between $800.00 and $1400.00... but I have too many unfinished projects now.

Good choice. When that motor is worn out, have a 6NZ C15 ready to drop in the hole. No modification!

I only have one and nothing else to compare to (and I'm not a trucker) but my 444 has been pretty good so far. I bought the truck a year ago with about 550k. It had an inframe done two years ago from what I heard. Not sure why it needed it, I know the shop and need to give them a call sometime.
My truck mostly sits on a job site so I've put very little miles on it. I keep track of hours though because I run the engine to operate the crane on the back. In the past year I've spent a lot of time tracking down oil leaks and fixing small stuff. The previous owners were very bad with maintenance. I've heard that from both the diesel guys that worked on it and the shop that handles the crane. All that considered I think it's doing pretty well. Just catching up on the maintenance and fixing the wiring gremlins the truck has really come alive when I actually do get to drive it.
I haven't figured out if mine was switched over to high flow cooling or not but I know it's possible. I have a friend that works transit, used to work at cummins, and I need to have him check it out some time. -
I wound up buying a 94 KW, so far it has been a great truck. Pulling a 50 ton stretch hyd neck lowboy now.
