company driver is probaly the best route for now...learn the ropes and hope things get better for the o/o's, or just forgot that route

To the OP... If you have sound business skills, capital reserves, good credit, and contacts in your industry so that you can niche haul, now is a great time to get in as the weak are falling by the wayside....

Davstl, it's just like in construction. There are always those who find a way to survive in hard times. Usually they find a nich, or they have a very solid business. I would suggest that if you are considering trucking as a new profession, start as a company driver. Learn EVERYTHING you can. In fact, run as if you were the business owner. Keep track of all expences. Figure what the load would pay your own truck, deduct ALL expenses(someone here could help with all you'd need to remember). This will also let you find out if you really want all the headaches that go into owning. I recently left construction also, this isn't a job. It really is a lifestyle. Your family may make your decision for you. Better to be a company driver if that should happen. Hope this helps a bit.
